A Clay County, Missouri, boy, Jesse and his family suffered greatly at the hands of neighbors for sympath ising with the South In the Civil War. Jesse Joined the guerilla band led by Quontrell and quickly established a reputation for courage and daring. At the end of the war he surrender ed and returned home. The following year, however, ena mles of the James family managed to have him declared an outlaw and for 18 years he was hunted. Always chivalrous. James never committed a crime except to main tain hta status as a freeman. With a price of $10,000 on his head effared by the Oovernor of Missouri James was shot to death In 1882 by one of the Ford Brothers, members of James', own gang. Jnmes' brother, Frank, the same year surrendered, and after a year waa released. Strange as It seems, two other no torious brother-gangs were composed of cousins, of theJamea boys; Grat tan. Emmet and Robert Dal ton, and Cole. James, Robert and John Younger. Robert and Grattan Dalton were both killed In a bank holdup In 1882. while Emmet, captured, served a prison term and later became a re spected citizen.
