Medford, who will erva as executive secretary. T. 8. Wiley. Ashland, was named committee chairman, with Otto Bohnert of Central Point, an Earl Ulrleh of Trail, making a group of representative farm leaders of the county. An allotment of 993,915 Is avail able in Jackson and Lane counties for the fiscal year ending July 1, 1939. to make farm purchase loans to qualified tenants resident In the two counties. Preference will be given married couples or persons with de pendent families and those who are able to make down payments, or own livestock and equipment necessary to carry on farming operations. Diver sified, family-sized farms will be rec ommended In all cases. Applications for tenant loans will be received at the county Farm Se curity Administration supervisor's Office, 311 Fluhrer building, Medford. beginning October 0, 1938. In keeping with the barn dance Idea, the honored gueat will be Orlf flnella, the grange pig. Orlfflnella, a little white pig was adopted by the grange last spring and fed cooperatively by grange mem ben until ahe now tips the acales at well over 300 pounds. The last fire damaged a home bought by the Kendys on Bathur.it atreet, In west-central Toronto, with part of the $13,500 "consolation price" Mrs. Kenny received aa runner-up In the baby race. Kenny waa arretted by officers of the Ontario fire marshal's depart ment after a chase through lanea and back streets near her home. When the offlcera went to the Ken ny .home.. Mrs. Kenny vlglrously pro tected ahe had done nothing wrong. nd darted out of the back door. 8he was soon captured, however, and taken to a police station, where ahe waa formally charged with arson. Creek Gold Hill Gold Hill Orange Booster Night Program Friday evening, September 30, to which the public waa Invited. was a big success with about iso in attendance from as far north as Granta Pass and as far south as Bellvlew. The program was opened with an address of welcome by Worthy Mas ter William Howes. Due to lack of space we had to omit seating drill opening of Bible and presentation of flag by assistants. Three songs by all. A wry Interesting letter from Na tional Master Louis Taber was read by Brother Fish. Address on agriculture by Master Howes. Beautiful tableaux dramatizing "Nearer My Ood to Thee." directed by Sister Jean Gray and sang by Brother Fish. A talk on many of the things the grange has accom plished In Ita 73 yeans of progresa by Overseer Ferguson. We were fortu nate to have some guest stare with us, Mr. George Maddox of Medford. who aang two beautiful solos, accom panied on piano by Mra. Maddox. and Mrs. Mlna Gordon, who sang two beautiful solos, accompanied on piano by Slater Beulah Nathan. These solos were greatly appreciated by all. An educational talk by County Deputy Nealon of Sams Valley. A very laughable skit. "Have I Taken Poison?" by William Howes as Mr. Crank; Pearl Gray as Mra. Crank: Alfred Hilton aa Uncle: Florence Howes aa maid: Bill Ferguson as Butler. We were also fortunate In secur ing Mr.-Oeorge OHchris to show us the pictures he took of the north west Jackson county fair and some of other sections of the country They were quite Interesting. Jacksonville Observing Booster Night with a covered dish dinner and program. Jacksonville Grangera had a most enjoyable evening. September 30. Every member participated In the after dinner dlscuaalona on "What Makea a Good Oranger." with some very clever and constructive talka. 'The program which followed con sisted of Opening of the Bible 'and prayer by the chaplain, Gertrude Martin: presentation of the flag and escorting of all paat masters to seats of honor; reading of National Master Taber'a addreaa of welcome: numbers by the ladles' quartet, comprised of Anna Wendt, Nellie Nledermeyer. Reva Henspeter and Gertrude Martin accompanied by Leora Nledermeyer: reading by Paul Henspeter: a "Professor Quiz" con test, conducted by Professor Flor ence Severance, who chose Roy Mar tin. Dellhla Jennings, I. A. Dew. Wynn Arnold and Anna Wendt as contestanta and Ralph Jennlnga. Katherlne Wendt and A. L. Beck as Judges. T. A. Dew came out with first prize and Mrs. Jennings and Wendt tying for second. This waa followed by dueta by George and Chester Wendt. acconv panled by Katherlne Wendt: a talk on "History and Present Problema of the Grange" by A. E. Brockway; and horn solos by Oeorge Wendt Live Oak Grange met In regular session Monday evening. October 3 While not a record attendance, yet a very Interesting meeting waa held. Reporta from H. E. C. chairman on amounts taken in on booth and stand at Gold Hill fair. Live Oak took first place on their booth for the first time at the fair, of which we all are Justly proud. Lecture program put en by Worthy Lecturer John Fleming waa In honor of - Pomona. The readlnga and gamea were in keeping with the aubject. Monday evening. Now they say the net work of ladders gives the salmon an avenue to spawning grounds that doesn't sufficiently tax Ita energy. Previously fish reaching the upper river were so exhauated they rested In quiet pools and, so to apeak, caught their breath. Thla made fish ing good. Now they reach the same regions without having to fight through the fast water and do not pause for their half-way point rest. Fishing la poor. Observers say the fish laddera have eliminated tho bruising tussle in the rock strewn rapids that prevloualy existed in the Bonneville vicinity. TWO DIE, 9 HURT DANCEHALL FIRE BIRMINOHAM. Ala.. Oct. 7, OFr Two persons died and nine others suffered burns today In a fire which destroyed Vanderbllt Gardens, tubur- ban dance hall and apartment build Ing. Nearly a score of persons. Including two small children, either Jumped or were thrown from second story windows to escape the flames. J. M. Kirk, 88 and partially deaf. and Mra. Fannie Lee Forman, 80. ware killed when the three-atory frame atructure collapsed, only a few min ute after firemen rrtved.
