Tn 13 major markets the weighted average price on 00.810 boxea was 13.17 for the week ending October 1 compared with 1.00 for the pre. vloua week and 83.31 a year ago. Demand for fall varieties of pears has been slow at not very attractive prices. EDWIN ROOT NAMED MUSIC TEACHER IN COUNTY SCHOOLS Edward C. Root, former owner of a music store here, has returned to Medford to make his home after pending the past 13 years In Port land where he conducted a studio. Mr. Root ha been named teacher of mualc In the Jackson county schools and will give Instruction In band and orchestral work. He has started his new work In the Oak Orovo school and expects to extend his teaching to the other tchooU tn the county system. Mr. Root has been a member cf the 16ind regimental band of the Oregon national guard In Portland, rated as one of the best concert bands in the northern metropolis. For the put eight years he has play ed an oboe with the band and at present is sergeant In change of thousands of dollars worth of In 4tniments owned by the government. Mr. Root anld he would devote all of his time to his school work and does not contemplate opening a studio here. He will be joined soon by Mrs. Root who Is remaining In Portland to complete business mat ters prior to establishing a home again tn Medford. The work of another Community Chest participating agency, the Jack son County Public Health associa tion, waa briefly summarized todsy so that the public would know how funds are utilized. "The control of tuberculosis Is the major activity of the health asso ciation." said O. O, Alenderfer, cam paign director. "The association has constructed three health cottages for isolation and treatment of tuber cular persons. The death rule from tuberculosis has been decreased In Jackson county from 43 per 100.000 population in .1938 to 14 In 1038. The county rate Is less than half that for the whole state and less than one-third that for the entire country. Community support Is needed to maintain this splendid record. The health association performs many other Yltal services, too. Baby cltnlca are held each month, with about 20 babies being examined at each clinic. Two dental rllnlca are sponsored each week. Laat year 500 children were cared for at these clinics, "A public health officer, county physician, sanitarian and five nurses are serving the people In the Inter ests of good heslth. 'Dr. O. C. Bellinger of the Oregon State Tuberculoels Rani tori urn Is brought to Medford twice a year for clinics at which examinations are made. These often uncover previously unknown cases of tuberculosis and thus open the way for treatment and cure. "Funds are used for supplies, health education, dental clinics. X-rays for tubercular persons and sispects. milk and other necessities for tuber cular persons. "The health association Is doing a public service that Is vitally need ed. Let us keep It going by contrib uting what we can afford to the Community Chest." FORESTRY EXHIBIT AT SHASTA MEET United State forest service will Install an exhibit In the Uthla hotel at Ashland for the Shasta Cascade Wonderland association convention next Monday and Tuesday. Central Idea of the exhibit la the multiple use of the forests In contributing to human welfare. The display will ba left In the hotel lobby for the remainder of the week after the con vention. The exhibit will consist of a re production of a log 14 feet long and four feet in diameter. Title of the display will be "The Qsteway to Modern Forest Conservation." The central display will be supported by two pillars representing "manage ment" and "protect I'm." The exhibit will show the major ises of the forest and of the soil resources that support the forest. A principal part of the exhibit will be a miniature city built to scale. The display will be Installed Sat urday by D. Francis Shook of Port, land, lta builder. Rav said today Torn Wiseman, arrested In connection with a fatal attack on Herman Scott, his employer, had admitted striking 9cott on the head with a crowbar. Ray quoted Wiseman as saying Scott was Injured tn a dispute over tise of a aaw with which they were cutting shakes Scott died later at a Lebanon hospital of a skull frac ture. Ray said Charles Cooper, a fellow workman, was a witness of the al leged attack, which occurred south of Crawfordsvllle. The 1939 budget for the city of Medford was adopted by the citizen's budget committee lest night. A pub He hearing on the proposed budget will be held soon prior to final ap proval by the city council. Time of the hearing Is to be announced by the city recorder. As adopted last night, the 1930 budget totals 1173,079.32 plus the standing two-mill levy voted by the citizens for street reconstruction. While the sum of the two-mill levy cannot be determined exactly until the city's assessed valuation Is estab lished, It Is calculated at the present to amount to about 17,000. This would make the total 1039 budget about 1 89 .079. Tills compares with $160,472.64 for the current year. The Increase ta due entirely to bond schedules that fall due and must be met In 1939, Mayor C. C. Furnas explained. Tho general bud get for operation of the city gov ernment la less than It waa last year. "Bond payments must be met when they fall due to maintain the city's credit," the mayor said. "Because the city has met all bond schedules tn the past, its credit at present la ex cellent. That la why we have been able to dispose of municipal bonds with as low an Interest rate as 2Va percent. The city is Just like a pri vate business when payments fall due they must be met. When the public realizes this, I am sure there will be no complaint over the in crease In the total budget. All bud get ltema have been pruned so far as possible but there is no way of escaping the bond schedules." It Is anticipated that the city's assessed valuation will show an In crease this year above the present figure of $7,671,545. The 1939 assessed valuation was estimated at about $8,500,000.
