irEDFORD MAIL THTBTTNTVMEDFO'RD. OREGON. FRIDAY, 'AUGUST 26, 1938. PAGE 'NINE 'X BIG ALASKAN BASE FOR AIR FLEET IS Next Congress May Get Re quest To Vote Funds- Need Of Defense For Pa ' cifio Northwest Studied. By O rattan McGroarty (United Press Staff Correspondent) WASHINGTON (CTP) President Roosevelt, on the recommendation of high navy officials, may ask con gress next session for an appropria tion to start development of a pow erful fleet air base In Alaska to com plete this country's Pacific "aerial frontier." The proposed Alaskan base, long desired by the navy department, theoretically would give the United States complete domination of the air over a 3,000-mlle stretch of water from the Aleutians to the Hawaiian Islands, establishing a battle theater nearly 2,500 miles from the American west coast In event of a Faclflo war. Bltka, Alaska, was officially desig nated a fleet air base more than three years ago, but development has been exceedingly slow and at present It will accommodate only six or seven airplanes. The proposed new base would probably be on Kodlak Island, and the navy department la anxious to make it the equal of such power ful stations as Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and Coco Solo, Panama canal one strategy Board Named A board of navy strategy experts was appointed recently to study ne eesslty for new naval shore stations, and It la understood that the Alas kan question la being given special consideration. Some ranking navy office are convinced that this country should have a naval fueling and repair base In Alaska, also, and It Is probable that this will be atudled closely In connection with the proposed air base. At the same time the war de partment has tentative plans for fort ification of some of tne Aleutian is lands with long-range coast defense guns. Both of these latter projeots would require huge expenditures and In all probability wrn not be under taken until the fleet air base la completed. If at all. However, the recent dispatch of 6 navy patrol planes lor maneuvers In the Alaskan area Is generally re garded here as an Indication of Im minent Improvement of the Alaskan defense system. This was the largest number of navy patrol planes ever sent to Alaska for summer maneu vers. Kodlak Inlet Sheltered Some naval experts do not con sider Sitka Ideally located for a fleet air base and are urging Its abandon ment, except as a possible advance or auxiliary base. In favor of the Kodlak site, located In a sheltered Inlet .easy to defend and difficult to attack. It. Is likely that Dutch Harbor also may be designed as an advance air base. The strategic Importance of Alaska In the United States national de fense system Is rapidly Increasing du mainly to the growing flying range of airplanes. Military experts point out that the entire northwest and Pacific coast Industrial sections of the United States could be wiped out toy enemy aircraft carriers from anchoring In northern waters from which they could launch an attack on the Pacific coast.
