PAGE SEVEN FiEGE OF TO TRAFFIC COP Wild-Eyed Man Rushes Up to Officer With Gruesome Evidence of Crime Wife Found Slain In Home SAN FRANCISCO Aug. 36 (UP A wild-eyed man dashfd up to traffic officer at a downtown inter section late yesterday and. exhibiting a piece of flesh, confessed to killing and mutilating his wife. "I've lust killed my wife," the man identified as Raymond Hughes, to.d Officer Arthur L. Schwerdt. Then Hughes pulled the piece of flesh from his pocket to prove nts story. Schwerdt walked the man slow'y to the curb and took him to a nearby bus station, where the officer tt phoned the homicidn squad. At the 616 Ellis street apartment address given by Hughes, they found the body of a 23-year-old woman lying on a bed. She had been stran gled and had been slashed with I hunting knife. Tnken to Scene. She was identified as Qene Mont comeryr 23, a waitress, and said to be the daughter ot a Toledo, Ohio. police officer. Hughes was taken there. As police began examining the third floor apartment, he stood by, dumbly staring at the nearly-nude body. Across the abdomen they saw note, scribbled In Indelible pencil It read: "Honey, I love you." On the dresser war a note, stained with blood. "Sweetheart from Darling." It read. "I love you and you only. I hope to to the same way as you for 1 lovt you. I am going to give myteiX up right now and will sea you wher ever you may go for I love you, I love you. Your daddy, Ray," Hughes was unable to give a co herent account of the slaying and police aald he appeared to be under the Influence of liquor. The intersection where he approach ed Schwerdt was five blocks from the apartment house where the body was found. Police were puzzled by a footnote to the note on the dreeser. It ald: PA. Call at 303 and get the low- down." The body was found In room 302. Next door, at 303. the police found woman asleep. She wm Identified Mrs. Betty Keith, 24. who said she was a friend of the slain woman. Mrs. Keith told authorities that Jealousy was the motive for the slay ing. She said she and the girl he called Gene Montgomery had come California fire years ago from Toledo. Ohio. Gene had married James Montgomery, Centralis, Wash., but divorced him to marry Hughes, a boatswain, about a year ago. Mrs, Keith said Hughes was Jealous and apparently became angry when Gene returned home early this morn ing from a visit to San Diego. Gene told me she was going to sleep all day," she said. (JT The bureau of agricultural economics said today world wheat prices for the 1039-40 marketing year wilt remain low, relative to prices In recent years unless there is a material reduction In acreage or an Improvement In world economic conditions. The bureau said on the other hand. If American production next year is kept in line with the agriculture de partment's wheat program, prices In this country "probably will average somewhat above world levels." The department Is asking wheat growers to seed only 85,000.000 asros for the 1939 crop compared with 40, 000.000 acres planted for this year'u crop. (API Fifteen hours after h attempted to assault a seven-year-old child, Oeorge Bron horst, age 40, was on the way to the state prison at Walla Walla to serve a life term. Bronhorst lured ths child from her tent home to the river bsnk and there attempted the attack. The child's screams brought help and Bronhorst was hurried to the county Jail to avoid immediate violence, A special night session of court was summoned and the man. who pleaded guilty to carnal knowledge, was sen tenced to Ufa Imprisonment under the new state law which provides such penalty when the defendant in an assault la under 15 years of age. Bronhorst mumbled a p.ea for len iency, but appeared stunned by the sudden action taken. He has been arrested on many minor charges. The Grange Gold Hill Grange Gold Hill Orange met August 14 with good attendance. Committee chairmen gave exceptionally good re ports. Quite a number, from our Grange plan to be present at the next agriculture meeting at the court house. Gold Hill. Live Oak and S&ms Val ley held their annual - picnic In Grants Pass August 21 with good at tendance. Dinner was served at 1:00 p. m, following which most everyone listened to the Townsend speakers who were also enjoyinf the park. Grange voted to let the Meth odist church use the Orange hall while they are rebuilding. Mr. and Mrs. Barnes, Chrlstensens. Crofts and Mr. Bailey are on serving commit tee for next Grange meeting Sep tember 1. Lecturer-program coi listed of four songs. Mrs. Barnes gave talk on poul try conditions, and Mr. Qreenleaf In Hamlet, followed by games. H EO. met at the home of Mrs Bill Ferguson August 23 with pot luck dinner at 12:30. They enjoyed watermelon and cantaloupes In the fternoon. Further plant were made for fair booths. Next meeting, Sep tember 27, will be held at home of Mrs. Earl Croft, with pot-luck din ner at noon. They were also Invited to a meeting In the court bouse at Med ford August 24. Gold Hill Grange is. planning on selling chicken dinners fair day. Chas. Bockersmlth and son Relh. August 23, the second regular meet ing was held with good attendance considering the fruit season. At this time we entertained Miss Muriel Morse of Hereford Grange In eastern Oregon, and Mr. Docrn of Upper AP plegate Grange. On August 10, a plcnlo was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Germer on the highway south of Phoenix, where more than 50 members and their families were seated at tables spread on the lawn, arid later en joyed cards and visiting.
