Jahn (United Press Staff Correspondent) BUCHAREST (UP) Owing to Sla vic strain In Its blood, the Rumanian nation Is deeply Imbued with mysti cism. The peasants, upward of 80 per cent of the population, still hear superhuman voices In the purl or brooks and In the rustling of trees Occasionally, "heavenly apparitions" speak from the clouds In the skies to shepherds and wanderers In lonely forests and mountains. The ordinarily peaceful and pa tient peasant easily becomes fanati cal If he feels hurt In his creed or In other religious convictions. This disposition makes him an easy prey for sham prophets and unscrup ulous agitators. Hints Over Calendar To adopt Rumania's time compu tation to western standards the gov ernment, eight years ago, put through a calendar reform and replaced the Julian calendar, observed In the eastern Greek orthodox countries, by the Gregorian calendar. This Implied setting forward the date by two weeks. At once 14 calendar saints thereby lost their old-established honors and their Incense. This Intervention of a terrestrial government in the established order of heaven sufficed to cause serious local revolts. Despite numerous missionaries, dis patched by the Patriarchate to edu cate the rural population, even today In some districts of the provinces of Bessarabia and Bucovina, peasants continue their passive resistance to the new calendar. They boycott churches and priests on movable holidays, while attending service on Sunday's, because the lat ter were not affected by the reform, the change being one of exactly two veeks. Strange Hect. Among the cab drivers of Bucharest and lossy are found a number of stout, beardless men with pronounced Slavic features. They are Skoptzl, membors of one of the queerest sects In the world's religious history. The Skoptzl (literally "Eunuchs") whose principles are based upon the teachings of Egyptian nnachoretes of the first centuries A. D., consider, sexual love for Its own sake a sin. The Skoptzl sect was founded In northern Russia In the early 17th century whence it spread with rap idity.
