Dally, 6-year-old daughter of Mr.

drowned In the Eugene city play
ground swimming pool in the Wil
lamette river Thursday afternoon.
The Uttle girl, who reportedly hod
been eating green apples, went
swimming when all life guards were
at lunch and the pool supposedly

BUCHAREST (UP) Owing to Sla
vic strain In Its blood, the Rumanian
nation Is deeply Imbued with mysti
cism. The peasants, upward of 80 per
cent of the population, still hear
superhuman voices In the purl or
brooks and In the rustling of trees
Occasionally, "heavenly apparitions"
speak from the clouds In the skies
to shepherds and wanderers In lonely
forests and mountains.
The ordinarily peaceful and pa
tient peasant easily becomes fanati
cal If he feels hurt In his creed
or In other religious convictions.
This disposition makes him an easy
prey for sham prophets and unscrup
ulous agitators.
Hints Over Calendar
To adopt Rumania's time compu
tation to western standards the gov
ernment, eight years ago, put through
a calendar reform and replaced the
Julian calendar, observed In the
eastern Greek orthodox countries, by
the Gregorian calendar.

Strange Hect.
Among the cab drivers of Bucharest

The Skoptzl (literally "Eunuchs")
whose principles are based upon the
teachings of Egyptian nnachoretes of
the first centuries A. D., consider,
sexual love for Its own sake a sin.

The Skoptzl sect was founded In
northern Russia In the early 17th
century whence it spread with rap
idity. The most drastic measures, in

the Great and Nicholas X, proved of
no avail.
Fled to Rumania,
In flight from persecution, thou
sands of members of this sect, chiefly
from the Russian province of Orel,
came to Rumania In the middle of
the last century.
Because they were excellent horse
men, most of them chose the profes
sion of cab drivers.
They kept apart from the rest of
the population and the government
tolerates their strange customs be
cause they do not Interfere with mil
itary service and other civic obliga
tions, and because the Skoptzl are a
law-abiding and peaceful group.
Another sect, chiefly composed of
people of Russian origin, are the Lip-
cvanl who live In the estuary of the
Danube. They are mostly fishermen
and enjoy the reputation of being
particularly skilled In their trade.
They deny the divinity of Christ
whom, like the Mohammedans, they
consider as a salnty man. They also
are conscientious objectors.
They possess no higher ecclesiastic
authorities than priests, who are
elected by the communities and or
dained by fellow priests.

CLEVELAND (UP) This city has
one of America's foremost, and per
haps best, negro "Uttle theaters."
Called Karamu, the playhouse was
built up to a first class and nation
wide reputation In theatrical circles
by a young couple Russell W and
Mrs, Jelllffe who started with noth
ing but their youth, ambition and
big Ideas. - .
The Jelllffes left school In 1910
and looked around for "an opening."
They decided finally on Cleveland be
cause the Lake Erie city "looked pro
mising." Mass Immigration of negroes
had Increased the population from
16,000 in 1915 to 80,000 In 1037.
They moved Into throe small rooms
In tiny cottage Their neighbors
thought the Jelllffes were "writing
a book." But It toon was noticed
that the young couple was having
many visitors. This "visiting" was
the beginning of the Neighborhood
association. i ;
And the association was tho be
ginning of the Karamu theater which
was started when six young negroes
visited the Jelllffe cottage and sug
gested to the couple the formation
of a dramatic group.
The theater now Is housed In what
at one time was a pool parlor. The
building's exterior Is unchanged. It
still Is shabby, but upon stepping
Inside the delapldatea structure, the
visitor discovers a gaudy bit of Af
rica. The short hallway Is decorated with
red and gray stripes, and the glass
In the door Is etched with scrlbbltngs
which resemble the African's concep
tion of the Palmer method of pen
manship. In the theater proper," the wains
coting is striped with black, red, yel
low, gray and old blue. The upper
part of the walls la scrawled with
some more African jargon. The gray
wooden celling has a huge sunbeam
In the center with olack radiation
running out and Into the gray walls
Doors all are striped la the African

stripes.
The "usherettes." all chosen for

Karamu which, Incidentally. Is
the fiwhhlll word for "house of roc
reatlon and entertainment" operates

However, many plays shown there
have sold out to such capacity crowds
the theater holds only 135 person
