Said Harry yesterday: "There are 3 million persona on work relief and Incidentally I think I know how they are going to vote In the coming election!" Sodoeseveryoneel.se. But why bring that up? It certainly doesn't help the Democratic party any, politically; and while it increases the blood pressure and agony of the opposition, we fail to see how it deprives them of any votes. What is, IS, as far as work relief is concerned, and shooting the poor devils while they are dying doesn't alter the situation. It short it looks to us very much like the work of a malicious and sadistic mind, a determination to wantonly inflict pain, with no other purpose in mind whatever. What a grotesque irony, if that IS what 5 years of practical politics HAS done for the character of the work relief adminis-, tratorl Wanted,-Another Moses K S far as federal relief is concerned, it is easy enough to see r what SHOULD be done, It's not so easy to see, HOW What should be done is this: The business of this country naired and imnroved. that it can more workers. But I was persistent and finally found one. It worked like a charm. I like particularly the common sense way you look at health problems and your apparent sympathy with the people In reference to hysterical spe cialism of the day. . . (M. H. B.) It Is the method I'd cr.cose of my tonsils were presumably the seat of a focus of Infection, especially if any complication rendered general anesthesia more thon ordinarily risky, It Is kind of you to sing my praises, but wouldn't It be nice to tell your friends about the doctor" who did such a fine Job of extrlpat Ing your tonsils? Years ago a good many well-mean- , lng but not well Informed doctors would not recommend the diathermy j method, and Indeed many throat spe cialists who had not yet learned the difficult technique of the modern method actually condemned It Is Incomplete , "unsatisfactory", "too slow" or even "dangerous." A few of the more excitable ones broke Into print and published In medical Jour nals rather childish diatribes ex pressing ell sorts of theoretical ob jections to the new method and be traying wide incgrance of It. But all that Is history now. You will have to search a long while to find a doctor of any standing or a throat specialist of any standing who condemns the diathermy method. Man About Manhattan By GEORUK lUCKLB NEW YORK. Burgess Meredith about whom so many kind things have been written In the past, 11 figuring unhappily in the news at. at the moment. The young man who has been tagged as "The Hamlet of 1943" is facing divorce proceedings from his pretty wife, and already 1 hear his home at Stony Point, in the High Tor country of tha Palisades, la up for sale. There la quite a history to this house aside from the posies that were written about It when Meredith and his bride bought It a couple of years ago Originally it wns a farm houne usod by Lafayette as his headquarters during the Revolutionary war. it commands the rugged terrain which the battle of 8tony Point was fought. Not long ago I happened to b driving by the place and waa in terested to find two cannon mount ed In front of the house. This, I thought. If they are genuine Con tinental cannon, waa a magnificent step toward rehabilitating Lafayette's old headquarters. And so I got out of the car and walked over to have a good look at them. But they weren't real, and their position there was evidence of an actor's theatrical Imagination. They were wooden, and the paint alreadv waa begtnnlng to chip off. I ara told Meredith purchased them at some theatrical house where props for dramas and psgeanta are sold. It may Interest you to know that til game of croquet has taken a strangle hold on the Imagination of lot of people in thla section of the country. Leagues have been formeo nd court are in all the parks and playground centers. Herbert Bayard Swope is said to be a maniac on the subject, and so Is Alexander WooUcott. He and hla wife planned for years a new home overlooking the bav lu San Francisco. And they began worn on it. Finally It waa completed, and then, after dreaming and hoplnc for so much, they reallred their wishes and started out to drive to San Francisco the other dav. Alcohol ic (multiple) neuritis Is likely to set in eventually if a drinker relies on such a source for calories from food To prevent such neuritis It Is well to supplement the diet with vitamin B. Crackers Are Good Food Do crackers dry up the blood? Is It harmful to use water on the hair every day? In winter sometimes it freezes. (P. B.) Answer Crackers are good food and do not "dry up" the blood. Only objection to frequent wetting of the hair is that It removes the natural hair oil and leaves the scalp and hair too dry. The Capital Parade (Continued from Page One ) this powerful Tammany district lead' er has been the New Deal's political spearhead in New York on seven, occasions. In the repeated efforts to capture the Tammany organlza tlon, Hlnes has always been the chief ally. And In passing out U. S. mar shalahlps. collectorshlps, even federal judgeships, Hlnes has always had more to say than anyone but Ed Flynn of the Bronx. Obviously, Dewey's prosecution of Htnea has a strong political flavor Obviously, If Dewey fails, the cry of political persecution will be deafen lng. But, If he succeeds, he will be the only thoroughly respectible Re publican 1940 prespect. Elsewhere, the Republican candidates are either nonentities or acknowledged servants of big business. But Dewey, heading the Republican ticket in New York, would be neither. Besides the great If of the Hlnes prosecution, there are plenty of other ifs in the situation. The problem of the Democratic candidate, for ex ample. Is pressing. Dewey does not want to run If Lehman or Wagner la to be hla apponent. Lehman has already ruled himself out. announc ing for the senate place of the late Royal S. Copeland. Wagner haa said repeatedly that he would not take the governor's Job on a silver platter, but Jim Farley still hopes to make him change his mind. Another big If Is the attitude of Mayor Florello H. LaGuardla. The excitable, shrewd little mayor has a huge personal following In New York, and he Is the best eampaiRner in the state. Publicly, he Is on good terms! with Dewey, but. all the same, he j dlslikrs Dewey only a little less than he dislikes Governor Lehmsn. H's ! gratuitous statement, wlthdmwin? his own name from consideration for a senate Place, was clearlv drsicned to kep Dewey out of the governor ship. And he is already iwarchins. lor rae way to oppose Dewey. Bruce Barton, who is making a name for hlmje'.f as a Republican with some srn.e. has frankly admit ted that he would i::e to run for the senate if lwpy runs for th governorship. Such a ticket would be the strongest the Republicans could name. Yet, oddly enough, the greatest If of all Is Dewey himself. Thus far. he has made hla name only aa a public prosecutor. He Is known to be ambitious, cool-headed, without much warmth of personality. His attitude on the civil liberties haa been called In question. Yet, beyond that, there has never been any dis cussion of hla Ideas or abilities. Be fore he can get anywhere. In fact, he must prove himself. Comment on the Days News By FRANK JENKINS 07 all the menaces to business (which is the institution out of which ALL OF US make our liv ing) unsatisfactory labor relations constitute probably the GREATEST menace. When labor and management can't get along, business simply BREAKS DOWN. When business breaks down, we all suffer. THE Wagner labor act has contrib uted to the breakdown of satis factory relations between labor and management. It puts too much pow er, along With TOO LITTLE RESPON SIBILITY, In U-.e hands of ambi tious labor leaders. When one party to a contract has ALL THE POWER and NONE OF THE RESPONSIBILITY, there Is bound to be trouble. BUT labor isn't wholly at fault. The bulk of our present labor troubles can probably be laid at the door of a small minority of employ ers. These men look upon labor aa a commodity. They look upon people who work as cogs in a machine. La bor ISN'S a commodity. Men who work ARENT cogs In a machine. Laboring men are HUMAN BEINGS. If they aren't treated as such, they are bound to be dissatisfied, and when tuey are dissatisfied they make trouble. OORTLAND lumber industry has had more than its ci:aro of labor trouble. But in the vicinity of Port land Is one smaH mill that has had NO labcr trouble. Through all the jurisdictional labor wars that have prostrated Portland's lumber Indus try aa a whole, this small mill has operated uninterruptedly. WHY? Because the boss has treated his employees as human beings, taking them into his confidence, telling tjiem hts troubles, outlining to them the problems he has to meet, and treating them wltu unfailing fair ness and Justice. So they have stayed with him, through thick and thin. F management of American Indus tryin other words, the BOSS will do a little less thinking about cold efficiency and a lot more think ing about living human relationships! tfe bulk of our labor troubles will soon vanish. There may have been a time In the world when labor had to be drlvenl If so, that time is gone GONE FOR EVER, so far as this country is con cerned. American labor can be led a long way. but it can't be driven an Inch. OREGON CITY CLERKS WILL QUIT PICKETING SALEM. Ore.. July 22. To the Editor: Prior to July 31. all corporations must file a declara tion of value of their capital stock. This declaration may be any amount the corporation sees fit to fix. ind so remains for a period of three years, and on which is paid a capital- stock tax of one dollar per $1,000. Many do not understand the effect this declared value has In their excess-profit tax, nor do they realize the amount of this tax until their return Is made up at the end of. the year. I can only Buggest here that a safe estimate for a declared value Is to estimate a net earning for the taxable year and multiply this by ten to get a fair declared value. If your final net gain la hf estimated, or less, there will be no excess-profits tax to pay. If your net gain Is in excess of your esti mate, you will have to pay a gradu ated a percent and 12 percent on such excess. I will gladly explain further to Inquirers. E. M. WILSON, C.P.A.
