Those motoring back to their re elective homes here were Miss Kath rine Stewart, Mrs. John P. Moffatt, Mrs. H. L. Brown and Miss Oertruds Parker. Easterners Visit In This City Mr. Edwin P. Orlffltha and daugh ter, Rachel, of Pittsburgh, Penn., are recent arrivals In Mcdford and are visiting Mr. Hnnce H. Cleland- The two are making an extended tour of the west coast for the pur pose of selecting a college for Miss Urlfflths to attend this coming year. They are registered at the Hotel Medford. Loyal Workers to Picnic Sunday The Loyal Workera class of the First Christian church will have picnic dinner at the Elks' Picnic grounds after the church aervleea Sunday, July 10. Oroup six, wlnnera of the member ship contest, will be entertained by the other five groups who are to furnish the plcnle dinner. After the dinner, games, hand ball and swim ming will be enjoyed. There will be sufficient transportation at tlas church for alt who wish to attend the picnic. Banks Identified the confession he made to state police last February and defense .attorney Oeorge Van derveer, Seattle A-F.L. attorney, read It In part. Threats Related "Frlesen (owner of the box fac tory) said he was going to lynch a picket In front of bis mill' the con fession read. "He threw rocks and eggs and hed him arrested." Ttie picket was later replaced with one on a bicycle and one of Frlesen's men out the bicycle tires, the con fession set forth. "I developed the Idea that the only way to deal with him (Frlesen) was to put him cut of business and destroy his plant." Under cross-examination Banks explained lie made this statement because he was told not to Implicate anyone else. "That whole story waa milled over In my mind for several hours, for the purpose of exonersttng everyone but myself." he said. "I had been told not to talk. I thought I would take the blame because I had been Identified as the fellow -vho paid tliem" (referring to John Newlande, Ernest Carson and Cecil Moore who have confessed). Advised To Keep Mum Banks quoted Roy Hewitt, Salem attorney, as saying to him: "There le no use to Involve any one else a the governor la going to railroad you to the penitentiary." Re waa atlll on the stand at the noon recess. Hugh Reynolds, of Eugene, former secretary of the Joint Belem-BUgene Council of Teamsters, took the stand for tha defense at the opening of tP.e trial this morning. Reynolds testified that he asked the Joint council to take Salem "off hla hands" In June, 1S37, and that he waa relieved of hla duties by Al Banks, former business agent, In January of this year. No one, he declares, waa authorized to take money out of the union cash funds and replace It wltli lOU's, Banks had previously said that It woa cus tomary to "tap the till" In this manner. Reynolds said ha objected to Banks' writing checks and that over 1300 had been charged to the organisation but he did not know for what purpose. When be asked Banks about it, Banka told him that It woa "for the benefit of the boys,' he declared. Upon cross examination Reynolds dented that he hod ever talked to Rosser about the way Banks handled affairs but a fsw minutes later said: Banks Judgment Poor t told Mr. Rosser that Banks did not know u.e value of money or bow to handle money." This was shortly alter the fire and he again asksd Rosser to be relieved at ence, he said. Banks woa then promoted from business agent and took over the secretarial duties at Salem. (AP) Crown Prince Oustaf Adolf of Sweden was reported In "very good" condition today at Harkneas Pavilion at the medical center where he returned last night after attending a lunch eon and a banquet In his honor yes terday. The heir to the throne of Sweden had been a patient at the .hospital for nine days until yesterdsy.
