June 24. 8pl Re hearsals for the fourth annual Ore gon Shakespearean Festival are al ready under way on the stage of the old Chautaqua building, remodeled after the fashion of the old Eliza bethan theatres. In response to the call of Director Angus h. bowmer drama head of the Southern Oregon Normal school, more than 30 young actors from Oregon and Washington and other parts of the country hava assembled In Ashland "to study the dramas of the Immortal Shakespeare "Four plays will be produced this ear Instead of the customary three. Mr. Bowmer announced yesterday. "In nddltlon to 'Twelfth Night.' 'The Merchant 'of Venice.' and the 'Taming of the Shrew,' we have already start ed to work on 'Hamlet'." The role of Hamlet, considered the most difficult that Shakespeare rum ever written, will be played by Mr Bowmer himself, who will be lonfi remembered for his past perform ances as Sir Toby Belch In "Twelfth Night." and Shylock In "The Mer chant of Venice." Both of these per formancea will be repeated this year That the Shakespearean Festivals have assumed national Importance and have captured national Interest la not to be doubted. 31 rice last win ter Mr. Bowmer has received letters from various parts of the country from actors wanting to Join hla com pany. Grace Forsythe. formerly of the Cornlr-h Touring Group and the Province town Players, has come from Washington. D. C. Gordon Davis of Boston. Mass., formerly production manager of sta tion WILL at the University of Illin ois and for the past year assistant director of radio at "ornlsh School In Seattle, arrived two days ago. In addition there Is Harry Priestly. In structor In fencing at Cprnlsh School and the central branch of the Y. M O. A. In Seattle: Tom Falrchlld. ?f Raymond. Wash., formerly of thr Cornish Touring Group; and Sally Geary, an advanced student from Cor nish School. Many local actors have Joined Mr Bowmer's company. Dorcen Love ret to. who has been with the company since Its inception and who for the past two years has been studying at Cor nish School, has again volunteered her services.
