hearsals for the fourth annual Ore
gon Shakespearean Festival are al
ready under way on the stage of the
old Chautaqua building, remodeled
after the fashion of the old Eliza
bethan theatres. In response to the
call of Director Angus h. bowmer
drama head of the Southern Oregon
Normal school, more than 30 young
actors from Oregon and Washington
and other parts of the country hava
assembled In Ashland "to study the
dramas of the Immortal Shakespeare
"Four plays will be produced this
ear Instead of the customary three.
Mr. Bowmer announced yesterday. "In
nddltlon to 'Twelfth Night.' 'The
Merchant 'of Venice.' and the 'Taming
of the Shrew,' we have already start
ed to work on 'Hamlet'."
The role of Hamlet, considered the
most difficult that Shakespeare rum
ever written, will be played by Mr
Bowmer himself, who will be lonfi
remembered for his past perform
ances as Sir Toby Belch In "Twelfth
Night." and Shylock In "The Mer
chant of Venice." Both of these per
formancea will be repeated this year

and have captured national Interest
