J. Murray Snaps Four-Year Jinx By Fishing From Proper Boat It's the little things In soJmon fishing that bring results. Consider the cose of Jim Murray For years Jim was a productive fisherman. Any time that he went out, It practically meant a salmon. Fishing was great sport; nothing bucks one up so much as landing salmon. It Just gives one a new lease on life; It makes everything hunkey-dory. Then something happened to Jim or to the salmon. At any rate, try aa he would, Jim couldn't hook a Chinook. The first flshless season wasn't so bad; Jim Just chalked that up to fisherman's luck, or the ab sence of It. The next year Jim contlnuod to fish without results. Then he began to get worried. He began to experi ment, eliminating various factors from his angling repertoire which he considered a Jinx or bad omon. Things went from bad to worse. For four consecutlvo yearB Jim went without a fish, though goodness knows he tried hard enough to bring in a salmon that the wlfo and klddlo could be proud of. Jim beenmo des perate. He tried out all kinds or things to break his bad luck. He changed his tackle, resorting to every thing but a bent pin. He changed his fishing partners. He went alone. But nil to no avail. He couldn't get oven a Btrlke. This year the old bogey again started out with him. Time alter time he went out on the old Regno and time attor time he came back without a sslmon. Thon something snapped. Jim landed a nice, big Chinook. Today life is again worth living. Jim's sun ny disposition has returned. His broad smile beams on everyone asaln And what restored Jim's luck? 4. green rowboat. It was that slmtole. "Never again will I fish In any thing but a green boat," Jim de clared. "That's my color and I should have known that long before now. From now on It's a green boat and lota of salmon." Nas Lute White W. Prultt . Sport Graphs Billy Hulen says: Tiger Athletes End Best Year In Sport Books Medford high school's 1937-3U ath letic seaurn was ended with the Ore gon track and field meet at CcrvUis Saturday, and while the Tlgera didn't f , v championships In 1 football, basket ball a n 4 bh-u ball, the mnjor sports, they did right well by them wives In southern Jregon. In fact, you could name the past VMr nA nnn nf th most successful 1iV ever enjoyed by Red and Bla-k clad athletes and by far the best since Coach Bill Bowerman took over the reins In the fall of 1035. Competing In the three major sports, the Tigers made a clean weep to win the conference or district title in each. The Black Tornado. after a rather slow start, generated terrific Billy Rulesj power In the dosing stages to win the football championship of the Southern Oregon conference without the loss of a game. Orants Pass and Ashland were beaten and Klamath Palls tied In conference action. In basketball, the Tigers didn't win the conference pennant, but rhey did grab the district 0 flag and right to enter the state tournament, a far more Important honor than the oon ference championship. It was a gruel ing battle down the stretch with Ashland, but Bowerman's casaba club had what It took In the cructtl wind up encounters. At the state tour ney, the Med fords were Just a little out of their class, but with a sopho more team they didn't figure M make a serious bid. Next year, those aoptu wlll be Juniors and seasoned In the fire of competition, and maybe many things will happen. The Tiger track and field team was away -ahead of Its southern Oregon rivals, winning two ilnal meets from Grants Pass by over whelming scores, grabbing the Southern Oregon district affair by a huge margin from 20 other RchooK Including Klamath O'allJ, and showing the strongest prep teams west of the Cascaded how It was done In the annual (111 I lay ward relays at Eugene. In the state meet last Saturday, the Tigers were submerged under an avalanche of record and near record breaking performances ay Bend's mighty Lava Bears, nrant high of Portland and others. Yes, this past season certainly pro duced plenty of hardware for the Tiger trophy case and we believe al those athletes, Head Coach Bowerman and assistants Rubs Acheson and Ed Klrtley deserve a nice, big hand. Three championship out of three at tempts Is what we consider a pretty fair average.
