Thursday was a big day for 175 grade school youngsters of the Applegate district who met at Ruch for sixth annual play day. Contrary to popular opinion, childhood does hav Its heartaches. A wee girl forgot her tennis shoes bought Just for the oc casion; prise ribbons wouldn't quite reach and soma had to be cut In half, a little boy felt quite sure he was being cheated. But these woes somehow were smoothed away in this glorious day of new dresses, races, and Ice cream. C. E. Gates of Medford was a guest speaker on the , forenoon program, which was held on an outdoor plat form decked with flowers and ever greens. Mr. Gates complimented the community on Its progressive spirit In promoting play day, and suggested that the neighborly attitude which It creates could extend even outside of this area through attendance of Medford business men. C. D. Conrad of Medford, county 4-H club leader, spoke on the 4-H work being carried on .In the Apple- gate schools, naming the projects studied In each school. He mentioned tfte possibility of exchange of projects between city and rural children. P. E Matheny, chairman of the Ruch-Steriing school board, gave the address of welcome, and Mat Ma theny acted as master of ceremonies Crowning of the May queen, Rosella Offenbacher of Beaver creek, as she sat on her throne together with the Maypole dance by pupils of Applegate school, beautifully climaxed the fore noon program. Flower girls for the queen were Janet Prowell and Lucille Culy of Beaver. She was crowned by Ruch-Sterllng girls, Elsie Kitchen acting as crown bearer, with Ina Belt West and Sena Hall ladies-in-waiting The program opened with the flag salute and community singing. which were followed by piano and vocal selections by Walter and June Medley of Little Applegate; play. 'The Sick Doll," and "Picnic Song,' by Forest Creek; rhythm band selec tion by Thompson Creek recitation by Dorothy Chadwtck of Union town r songs by Union town and Watklnt schools: folk dances and harmonica bond selections by Beaver and Ruch Referees for the track events which occupied the afternoon were Miss Phyllis C rouse and Jess Barton of the Southern Oregon Normal school Mrs. Kathryn Denser of Applegate acted as general chairman for the day.
