MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFOTCD. OKEOON. SUNDAY. MAY 1. 1933 PAGE TWO ANCIENT FOSSIL VIEWED BY MANY The hea4 of the prehistoric animal found Wednesday In the Sterling nine was encased In piaster of Parla for preservation at the Jackson Coun ty chamber of Commerce yesterday. The plaster work was done by John Eliot Allen, geologist, and Ralph Ma son, chemist, of the Rustless Mining corporation wro were asked to come here from Grants Pass to preserve the skeleton by Dr. Warren D. Smith, professor of geology at the University f Oregon. Dr. Smith plana to come here himself Tuesday or Wednesday, Mr. Allen said. A. H. Banwell, manager of ths chamber of commerce, said that it wan likely the fossil would be taken upstate for scientific study and ex. hlblt. Ultimately, however, It will be returned to the Southern Oregon Ocm and Mineral society for Its projected museum here, he stated. Mr. Allen said the skeleton, com prising skull and horns, was the re mains of an animal or tne not group, related to an extinct species of water buffalo. The animal belonged to the Ice or Pleistocene age and might pos. elbly date back tOO.000 years, he stat ed, adding that to speak more author itatively he would have to examine the deposit In which It was louna. Dr. Wlnnlfred Bradway, head of the science department of the Southern Oregon Normal school In Ashland ex amlned the fossil Thursday and also aald It appeared to be the remains of a water buffalo. She estimated the age. however, at 40,000 to 60.000 years In geologlo terms, she added, that was not old. Hundreds of persona viewed the fos sil, found 35 feet below the surface, while It was on exhibit at the cham ber of commerce. It aorved to emplHV lie the value of the Southern Ore gon Gem and Mineral society, Mr, Banwell said. It was removed, brought to Medford and treated for preserva tion by E. R. Santo and William Mc Clure of the mineral aoclety. CALCULATORS Blerma, lid North Central. Phone 383.
