The announced plan to dissolve the federal senate and chamber of dep uties and the promulgation of a new constitution bring this vnst nation Into the spotlight. "A glance at a map of the Sou th American continent reveals Brazil's great alae. says a bulletin from headquarters here of the National Geographic society whloh points out that "It oanatltuteg the whole northeast ahoulder of the continent, and nearly all the remaining South American countries could be swal lowed up within Its borders. The whole I continent of Australia lacks about 300,000 square miles of equaling the South American republic "In spite of Its vastness and oo nomte Importance In the western hemisphere, Brazil Is little-known even to the great bulk of Brazil ians, for much of It area of trop ical forests has been unseen by white men and many of the natives In the remote Inland regtons are unaware of government activities at Rio de Janeiro, the capital. I "The republic Is made up of 10 states. Three of them are larger than Texas (two are more then twice as large ) and a fourth is nearly equal In size to our largest commonwealth. Along the Atlantic coast are the republic's smaller, thickly populated states that more nearly resemble the commonwealths of the United States. The smallest Brazilian state, however, is more than six and one-half times larger than Rhode Island. Beyond tbs coastal zones the states seem to spread boundlessly. They are known to be rich In minerals but develop ment of resources In the deep for ests Is still In its Infancy. Luxuriant Forests "The western hemlnphere's largest tropical area Is within Brazil and the republic covers a greater seg ment of the equator than any other country In the world. In the Ama zon river, It contains the world's greatest river. Its eastern peninsula reaches into the Atlantic so far that lt tip Is nearly in the same lati tude as the Azores Islands, more than half way across the Atlantic between New York and Lisbon. Despite Brazil's unexplolted In terior, the republic holds an en viable commercial position In South America. It is the world's greatest j source of coffee, from an adopted I plant whose, origin was Ethiopia.! Coffee plants flourish In south eastern Brazil and the name ol Sao Psulo state is nearly synony mous with that of the aromatic bean. "Rubber trees are Indigenous to Brazil, The great plantations of the far east were started with cuttings taken from Brazil. Brazilians con tinued to collect rubber In crude fashion from wild trees In her for ests while the eastern plantation owners scientifically developed their trees. When the eastern plantations began to produce, Brazil's position in the rubber world began to to boggan. There Is now, however, a concerted effort In Brazil again to win its former position as a rubber producer through the plantation system. Cotton, sugar and cacao also are commodities that more and more are becoming prominent in Brazil's commercial life. In 1816 the colony became a kingdom and In 1889 a republic as a result of a revolution, t "It is estimated that there are about 46,000,000 persona In Brazil, about two-thirds of whom are native-born. Italian -born residents number more than a half-million and there are nearly as many Portu guese. There also are about 319.000 Spaniards, 53.000 Germans and half aa many Japanese. The United States is represented by about 3,500 Inhabitants. "The large cities are In the coastal states with the exception of Manaos (84,000) which lies on the banks of the Amazon, 800 miles Inland. , Rio de Janeiro has a population of nearly two million and there are nine other cities with more than 100,000." TO FOSTER HATCHERY IS SALEM, Nov. 28(AP) The state fish commission will construct hatchery on Poster creek, tributary of the Rogue river, about 40 miles northwest of Orants Pass, Governor Martin said today. Construction of the hatchery was part of the settlement of the "min ing mud war" between Rogue river mining and fishing Interests. The governor said Orants Pass in terests took it for granted that no hatchery would be built when the game commission refused to do so ''As a result of conferences con cerning the development of the Rogue fishing and mining Industries, it was decided that the hatchery should not be built by the game commis sion, but would be built by the fish commission, and that the game com mission would Improve Its facilities , higher up on the stream," the gov ernor said. The hatchery, to be In operation j by March, will propagate salmon. Pishing interests complained that mining killed the fish, but the gov ernor said there would be no more mud In the stream and that the ' state would do Its best toward re- plenishing the fish stocks In the river.
