PAOE FIVE THANKSGIVING DAY QUIETLY OBSERVED IN MEDFORD AREA Reports from various quarters to day showed that Thanksgiving was observed quietly and hapDily In Medford. No serious accidents marred the day and the public In general appeared to enjoy the holiday. The largest crowd in Its history about 800 couples, attended fhe an nual firemen's charity ball in Orien tal Gardens last night. A tidy sum was realized for the fund used by the firemen In rebuilding and re painting old toys for distribution among poor children at Chrlstmaa For the public's support, Chief Roy Elliott today expressed his ap preciation. He said the large throng had a pleasant evening, the ball proving to be the most onjoyable ever held by the firemen. Senior high school football players and their partners, guests of the firemen, added to the liveliness of the occasion. At one time they gath ered In the center of the ballroom floor end started a square dance which proved extremely popular, all the dancers falling Into the spirit of the youthful celebrants. Roberta Hamilton, musician from Denver, Colo., was well received In a group of accordion numbers Ninety persons took advantage of the holiday to see Crater lake in Its winter regalia. The park attendance was about equally divided between Medford end Klamath PaJls, head quarters here said. Of the park visitors 21 were pri marily interested in skiing while the others were attracted by the scen ery, rangers reported. His reference was to the members of other C. I. O. unions who helped swell the U. A W. A.'s picket force. PONTIAC, Mich., Nov. 26. Ft Work was resumed today at the Ponttac plant of the Fisher Body division of General Motors corpora tion with 2,000 employes going back to their jobs. The plant was closed by a sit-down strike November 17. the strikers holding the building for five dsys. The remainder of the plant's 6.000 workers will report for duty Monday. The Pontlac motor car factory . which was forced to close when the flow of bodies from the Fisher unit ceased, is expected to reopen early next week. The Pontlac plant em ploys 10,000 men. COURT TERM Term of United States district court here has been deferred from November 30 to January 18. Paul Hanlln. deputy marshal was noti fied today by Marshal J. T. Summer vtlle of Portland. It was originally planned to hold a session here be ginning next Tuesday. A grand Jury will be Impanelled to review pending cases when court convenes here January 18, Mr. Hanlln said. Several criminal cases in this Jurisdiction, all from Klamath Falls, are awaiting grand Jury action. Eight federal prisoners are now held In Jackson county Jail nere and their cases wlh, oe reviewed by the Medford grand Jury, Mr. Hanlln stated. WILL PLAY GOLF A weird game of golf will be played In the snow on the rim of Crater lake Sunday for a Universal reel of odd events. Members of the Rogue Snowmen will play the game on snowshoes, using balls painted black so that they can be seen against the white back ground. The lake itself, surrounded by trees traced In snow, will form the background for the unique setting. The game will be filmed by Paris Emory, Universal ace cameraman of Portland who frequently has brought national attention to Medford and the Rogue valley with his novel movies, Emory arrived here this morning, asked that something unusual be arranged for him to film at the take Sunday, and darted out for Klamath Falls where he hoped to get some unusual pictures of ducks and geese. He will be back here Saturday night to pick up companions for the lake Jnunt Sunday. A. H. Banwell. manager of the Jackson County Chamber of Com merce, got In touch Immediately with Harold Larsen. president of the Rogue Snowmen, Together they cooked up the golf tourney. E. P. Leavitt, park superintendent, will accompany' the group to the lake If he Is in town, Mr. Banwell said If Mr. Leavitt Is absent. John Doerr,. Jr., park naturalist, will make the trip. It Is expected that the freak game will attract many to the park; had known for 10 years, Mrs Mary Hughes, as his assailant. Elllthorpe, who hinted that he was attacked because she thought he was going to leave her, said she took 200 from his wallet and fled, saying that if she read of his death, "Ml Jump in the river," Police bad no trace of her. Doctors gave Elltthorpe a 50-50 chance for recovery. Hsrack said Elllthorpe told him he came here yesterday for Thanksgiv ing dinner with Mrs. Hughes. In the late afternoon, he said she suddenly went into the kitchen of her home, turned on rhe gas Jets and said "she i was showing how she was going to end it all when the time came." Elllthorpe, Horack related, told of turning off the gas and going to a window. "The next thing I knew I was struck on the head from be hind." the report said. The man ran into the bathroom and through to the bedroom, where he fell down. He claimed she continued to hack at him, then turned and rifled his clothes. Horack said someone had attempt ed to wash away blood in the kitchen. OF PORTLAND. Nov. 26. On December B Santa Claus will wing his way to Medford from his North Pole home. He will fly over town at 3:45 p. in. and land for a visit at the municipal airport. He will then be driven to the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce whore he is scheduled to arrive at 4 o'clock. There he will distribute candy and toy balloons to children. While Santa Is at tne chamber, the senior high school band and girls fife, bugle and drum corps will enter tain the youngsters. Afterword the high school organizations will play at several downtown Intersections. On December 18 the musical pro gram will be repeated, with the junior high school band and girls fife, bugle and drum corps providing the music. On December 23 a program of Christmas carols will be broadcast over KMED from 4 to 4:30. The program is now being arranged by Mrs. Effie H. Kurtz. All merchants will be asked to cooperate by picking up the program on radios Installed inside or Just outside their stores, the chamber of commerce stated. DEAD IN SHANTY ON STEWART AVE. William Kennedy, 72, a bachelor living in a one-room wentherbcaten house on Stewart avenue about one half mile south of Thomas road, v.as found dead at 11 o'clock this morn lug by a neighbor. A. D. Flannry. Deputy, Coroner Herb Brown said death probably was caused bv a heart attack, occurring probably late yes terday afternoon. He was lying, fully clothed in old overalls, near the bed In his clut tered cabin when Flanary discovered him. Flanary stated that ho knocked at the door and when he received no answer, pushed It open. He then went across the road to the home of Ira M. Snyder, where he telephoned the state and city police. Flannry. who lives a short dlstmee south of the Kennedy house, hald he talked with the nefd man yesterday afternoon about 4 o'clock uul that he seemed perfectly well. The deputy coroner Judcod that, from the condi tion of the body. Kennedy had been dead since about 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Kennedy had lived alone for sev eral years.
