PAGE ELEVEN POPULARITY CONTEST UNI .5 Added Luxury in "JubUee" Plymouth for 1938 With -all proceeds to be used for support of school sctivlties, Medford Junior high school will stage Its fifth annual carnival November 5. from T:SO until 11 p. m., at the school building. A show, "Quintuplets snd the King." will open the carnival, fol lowing which the many concessions snd booths will receive the spotlight. There will also be a negro minstrel show. In conjunction with the carnival, a contest Is now being held to de termine the most popular boy snd girl In the school, with votes naming the winners. Each ticket sold en ables the seller to oast 100 votes. The winners will be announced the night of the carnival. Following are the boys and girls competing for the honor: Verne Kel lenbeclc. The Hal lowe'en motif was carried out in both decorations and refreshments, and presents were given to the guest of honor. There were 11 ladlea present. Mr. and Mrs. Peter Pick and two sons and Mrs. Henrietta Pick drove to Ashland Sunday and to summit of the Slsklyous. Sam Conrad and sister, Manna, stopped off a day last week to visit Miss Alice Hoefs. They were en route home to Portland from a vacation in Los Angeles. R. Coleman'a court, with Lewis Applebaker as complaining wit ness. The warrant formally charges Carter with failure to furnish his name and address at ths time of an accident. Carter lives on Forest creek. The warrant was placed In the sher iffs hands for service today. The oomplalnt allegea that after striking the auto In which the In jured woman was a psssenger, the driver sped away. COUNTY TAX LEVY LESS NEXT YEAR The Jackson county tax levy for atate and county purposea the com ing year will be about 11 1 mills or seven or eight mills less than test year, Assessor J, B. Coleman pre dicts. The amount budgeted for coun ty expenses la approximately WO.000 less than last year the assessor says. City leavles on the whole will be about the same as last year, the as sessor said, with the Medford total levy, city, schools, county and state. running close to 68 mills. Butto palls, a few years ago widely known aa possessing the highest school district levy In ths atate, will have no school levy according to a budget filed with the assessor. Hostesses at a Hallowe'en party at the U. S. hotel on October as were Mesdames Hamaker and Davis. Eighteen guests enjoyed the eve ning. Mr. and Mrs. D. Jordan of Fort land were guests recently of Mrs. Dora Harbaugh. Mrs. Jordan is a great niece of the late Oliver Harbaugh. The Grange Phoenix Orange Phoenix Orange met Tuesday with 37 members, three candidate and two visitors present. The agricultural committee report ed on development of the experiment stations In Oregon during the past 50 years. Two visitors, Mr. Ooran of Upper Appiegate Orange, and Chas. Hock ersmlth of Mountain View Orange, spoke. Home economics committee report ed Lillian Coleman, Edmond Ander son, Elva Caster, Mary Carey, Sybil Edwards, Maggie Germer, Ida Bishop and Echo Alford as serving for next meeting. Next meeting of H. S. club will be the evening of November 6 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elvtn Inmsn. The club ts to entertain husbands with a covered dish supper. Obligations In third and fourth de grees were given to Al and May Hilton and to Norma Price. During lecture hour a newspaper was presented by members. Ladles of Home Economics club of the Phoenix Orange were entertained by the Eagle Point club Wednesday at the Eagle Point Grange hall. A big chicken dinner was served. Eleven ladles of Phoenix Grange attended. Mesdames Elizabeth Denser, Gerald Ine Reedy, Sarah Walker, Mildred Ward, Zelpha Armstrong, Mabel Quackenbush. Enid Canter, Frances Knudson, Telltha Pickle, Bertha In man, Miss Elva Canter and Mrs. Nordqulst, slso of Phoenix, were present. Sams Valley Grange Sams Valley Grange held a special meeting October 22 for Initiation In first and second degrees. A capacity crowd attended with large numbers of visitors from other granges. After the meeting closed, J. W. Fish, lec turer of the Gold Hill Orsnge, pre sented a very entertaining program which was greatly appreciated by the host grange. Next regular meeting will be No vember 8. Members are notified that the annual election of officers will take place at this meeting.
