Japanese Military Group Would Slam Door Upon World After War Is Won Cold Producing Instruments Placed On Hopeless Cases Stop Pain-Wild , Cells Show Degeneration. By floward Blake tee Associated Press Science Editor CHICAOO. Oct. 38 (AP) A new attack on cancer by use of refrigera tion, on the principle that the wild growth of this disease may be curbed the aame as the growth or plants and nme animals la stunted by cold, was announced to the American College of surgeons hero today. The experiments were all done on human beings. Among them one case of "hibernation" or a. cancer was produced. Under refrigeration this particular cancer has disappeared although the patient had been pro nounced "hopeless." The refrigeration technique was announced, as "a new point of rlew" by Temple Pay, M. D., professor and head of the department of neurology and neuro-surgery and George C. Henny, M.D., director of the depart ment of physics. Temple University School of Medicine, at Philadelphia. Try Dangerous Type The type of cancer refrigerated Is metastasizing carcinoma. It Is the kind which spreads from one part of the body to another. It Is one of the moat dangerous. The clue to the refrigeration Idea came from noting that this kind of cancer was mostly confined to the warmer "segments" of the human body. The breast, for example. Is warmer than the lower legs and also has more of this cancer. "Examples," says the report of Doc tors Fay and Henny, "of arresting growth and preserving food-stuffs through sustained measures of In-1 duced low temperatures are so com mon In our agricultural. Industrial and oconomc life that they need no mention. The Ice-box or refrigerator serven this purpose In every home. "The fact that the sterilized hen's egg lies dormant as a single cell until activated alone by the Influence of a 'critical' temperature around 103 de grees fan rW fit is worthy of far deeper consideration than would ap pear at first glance." Snecal Instruments Dr. Henny, the physicist, devised Instruments which could be placed on the human body to lower tem perature In specific regions. This temperature drop occurred on the kin and extended also some little distance Into the body. In some cases the refrigerating de vices were In contact with the can cerous growth. In others they were close. They were used only on cases pronounced hopeless by any known method of treatment. The most Immediate and striking result of the refrigeration was "prompt and gratifying relief of pain." There was temporary Improve ment In the general nutrltonal state of the patients. Where the refrigeration Instru ments could be applied directly to the cancer the growths have shown some diminution In else. Microscop ical examination of the refrigerated growths showed "marked degenera tion" of the wild cells. The report says the experiment has not been going on long enough to draw any conclusions as to the ulti mate result of refrigeration. "The principle of hlberatlon." the report states, "was Induced In one case In this series by means of radia tion (X-rays or radium) to the pitu itary, thryrold and ovarian glands. At the present time (nine months following treatinent) the pa tient Is free of the symptoms of malignancy." There la fear that Japan might be starved out by some sort of economic block ade, applied by the western powers to stop the warfare in China. So the militarists would have us rewrite Into drab language and with an antl-cllmax one of young Amer ica's fsvorlte dramas the heroic tale of how Perry discovered the open sesame to the then mysterious land of the shoguns. It Is nearly a hundred years since Perry, having fought plratea on the Spanish main and otherwise covered himself with glory sailed into the forbidden harbor of Yedo with nis little fleet of six ships In quest of atltl bigger thrills. Since then Japan has taken her place among the world powers. Now some of the descendants of the all powerful and militaristic shoguns would turn the clock back a century. Would He Empire The Isolationists clstm Japan can got along without the west if she takea northern China under ner suzerainty along with Mancnoukuo, They pointed out that their anccs tors enjoyed Isolation for some tw and a half centuries until Perry cAme knocking at the door. It Is noted that the Japanese peo ple are frugal and subsist largely on fish and rice. No starvation there. China's Hopeh would provide the essential Iron ore. From Shansl and Mancnoukuo would come coal, and shale from which can be extracted oil. The project provldea that Japan would cease Importing her wool from Australia and depend on syn' thotlc wool, made at home. This artificial product Is said to have proved satisfactory. Jlus Obtained Cotton Japan must have cotton. She has been getting most of her supply from America and India. Now, say the modern shoguns, the huge cot ton crop of northern China will go far towards filling the bill. It is admitted, however, that there will still be weakness In the matter of cotton. Asia doesn't pro duce the long-staple cotton win cn Japan requires. That come mainly from the United States, and prob ably will continue to do so.
