PXQTC FOUR TirEDrORT) "SfATL TRTBTjyE. MEDFO'RT), OREGON, TTTESDXY, OCTOBER 26, 1937 11 ' j 5-i FOR TIGER TEAIV Bowerman Taking No Chances Further Injuries Before Week End Clash With Famed Lava Bears With the exception of one-halt feour tough offensive and defensive drill tomorrow afternoon, Medtord felffh school's Blaok Tornado will take It easy the rest of the week, Coaob. Bill Bowerman stated y eater nay. The Lava Bears of Bend high, Oregon's mightiest prep gridiron ma. Chine, move Into town next Satur day afternoon, and the Tiger mentor J talcing so chances of Incurring further names to the already rather Harming hospital list. Although none of the Tigers re ceived serious Injury in the savage Klamath Falls battle Friday, the game didn't help their health any. Every member of the Tornado was shaken to his toes by the shocking encounter. "They look drawn and tired," the head man stated. "They will receive nothing but easy dummy drills and aerial maneuvers, both offensively and defensively for the remainder of the week." Minor casualties In the Klamath affair were Red Boot, blocking back who received two severe bruises, snd Warren Bayllss, another blocking quarterback, who was battered un mercifully. Bowerman took blm out of the game In the third quarter, practically out on his feet. He will take It extremely easy this week. Both should be resdy to go against the Lava Bears, however. Eldon Grow, who was a greet fullback against the Pelicans, bruis ed leg-muscle and all, received no aggravation to the hurt, and la In fair condition. Dan Ehrhart, huge tackle, played the entire affair with a sprained toe. He also, Is OK now, and both will be In top condition for the greatest test of the year. Practice yesterday consisted ot nothing more than Umberlng-up xerclses and signal drills. And. so It will be with almost no exception the remainder of thla week. The Tigers have passed the stage where mi neea orutai man-to-man scrim- mage, and from now on out will oonoentrate on gearing their plays to a keen pitch and assimilating new oiienaive maneuvers. Coach Bowerman was highly pleas ad with the way his forward wall perrormed against the Pelicans, es pecially when It held for downs within Its seven yard line and agslnst the battering Dominic Qlo-Tanlnl. Before a screeching crowd of mat addicts that Jammed the Medford armory to the celling. Bob Kenaston of Gold Hill took apart Pete Belcaatro of Weed in a wild-eyed mam event laat night, grabbing one fall after 13 minutes of action and winding things up four minutes later. Belcaatro, a bsdly beaten grappler, managed to win one fall Is 16 minutes. In the other half of the main event Bobby Chick hoisted Olen Stone to hi shoulders and gave him the bust neaa In the form of 14 complete revolutions of the airplane apln, end ing the squabble then and there. . Frankle Clemens beat Frankle Mur dock In the opener, taking two out of three falls. That bout between Belcaatro and Kenaston had everything, or enough anyway, to send the capacity house Into near hysterics time after time. The Mad Marine from Gold Hill col lected the first tumble 13 minutes after the opening gong, and after Belcaatro had opened the book wide. Including the page that explains how to pick ngnu witn tne rereree. Raging mad. Pete resented the actions of Referee Earl Toakley In attempting to keep things on a clean basts, snd the two stsged a knock-down-and-drag-out set to before Kenaston pushed Yak ley aside and started to work him self. It waa then that Kenaston ap plied a Boston crab to the Italian, the hold being set up when Belcaatro missed fire with a dropklck and landed on his back. Four minutes later, Kensston had the match. Before the end, however, Pete tangled with a ringside spectator; Pete kicked Kenaston outside the ring. Pete batted Referee Toakley around the arena, and Pete went nuts. Belcastro's brawl with the cus. tomer started after Kenaston had dumped the Mad Italian Into the first row ringside. Crashing into the lap of a rather small gentleman. Pete apparently lashed out with his feet, catching the patron on the but ton. Tne latter worthy came up fighting, and he and the Belcaatro fellow traded rights and lefts In a wild flurry before Pete finally ran for the ring. Just as the law appeared on the scene. Back In the arena, Kenaston start- ed awlnglng terrific haymakera to Belcaatro s cranium, and when It ap peared Pete waa ready to die like a man, he suddenly grabbed the Gold Hlller and flopped him with a re sounding body slam. The ref tapped Pete on the back, and that waa evi dently that. However, as the Italian rose un steadily to his feet and turned to ward his corner, Kenaston attacked from all aides, mostly from the rear. and crushed the Callforntan In a Gold Hill crab. The, fall was over and time was supposed to be out, but Kenaston paid no attention. He poured It on while the orowd went off their beans, and when Toakley finally got Kenaston off Belcaatro, the latter was through for the even ing. Unable to answer the gong for the third and deciding fall. Yoakley awarded the match to Kenaston. It wsa the prize acrewey decision of all time, and grapple fana today are atlU wondering how It happened. Apparently time means nothing to Yoakley, for when Kenaston attacked the Italian. It waa auppoeed to be the rest period between rounds. The Stone-Chick affair waa also a honey, with the reputedly villainous stone watching his Fs and Q's until near the end of the match. He fin ally cut loose with plenty of foul punches, etc., and Chick came right back for more. The end came after Chick bad battered Stone to the car pet at least a dozen timet with rab bit punches. When Bobby figured Glen waa ready for the spin he went to work. In the opener, Murdock took the first tumble In the second round with a figure-four leg-breaker. Clem ens evened the count In the next csnto with a sktn-tbe-cat, and won In the fourth with a body slam. It waa a clean and scientific match. Sport Graphs Billy Hnlen 8ayi: Lava Bears Bring Terrifying Record For Tiger Battle but Its attack and defense la consid ered brilliant by all who have teen it perform. Razzle-damle plays an Important part In the Bend attack, according to newspaper reports of games, but It Is mostly on the ground that Bend develops It tremendous power. The attack Is built around Fullback Red den, a terrific line smasher, and Wslt Lldstrom, left end. Bend's pet maneuver la apparently an end around, with Lldstrom packing. Against The Dalles, he blared S yards to pay dirt on the play, and a moment later raced 33 yards, then lateraled to Halfback Dyer, who scor ed. It was Lldstrom In the Lincoln guns who scored the lone touch down, going six yards on the same old end-sround. BOWLING ter 1 it' A tlly Hnlea If reports from all parts of the state mean anything, Medford hlgh'a Tigers can consider their peat foot ball encounters m e r e ly warm up sffslrs com pared to what they will face Saturday after noon when John Londahl brlnga his mighty Bend Lava Bears to town. Trusting that Coach BUI Bow erman's charges won't get stage fright upon read ing this, let's take a look at some highly Interesting records and angles of the team the entire state ot Oregon Is calling "one of the greatest In history." First, and probably the most startling record carried by the Lava Bears U their won and lost percentage over a period of two years. It It a matter of cold fact ' thst In the last 21 football games played by the eastern Oregon ag gregation, they have not tasted the bitterness of defeat. Laat year, Klamath Falds managed to gain a tie with the Lava Bears, but In all other games the team powered Its way to victory. This season, so far, Bend has tram pled six straight opponents, run ning op 176 points to 13, and has not even been pressed, with the possible exception of the opening 6-0 game against Lincoln high of Portlsnd. Some expert opinion aa to Bend's great aggregation was reported by Frits Kramer, Eugene high coach who was scouting the Klamath Falls. Medford game lost Friday night. Kra mer hod seen the Lava Bears defeat The Dalles and Corvallls previously. and he remarked that this year's Bend eleven was better than his own Eugene team laat year. It will be remembered that the Axeman last season whacked every opponent with the greatest ease and wound up by lacing Medford, 44-0. My, oh, my. If what Kramer says la true, let's start praying now for the Tornado. However, since thst Klamath Falls rune, we Just can't see our selves climbing off the Tiger band wagon completely. Bower man's team may get beat Satur day, everything points that way, but we can't see the Tigers get ting a disgraceful drubbing. Maybe they will, but we are from Missouri, and so are plenty more local phllherts. Bend has got to show It first before being ac claimed the victor. There Is only one team that can provide a basis for compsrlson. by scores, of Bend and, Medford The Dalles. Klamath Fella lost to The Dalles, 6-7, while Bend defeated the same team, 37-7. Therefore, on com parative scores. Bend Is 31 points better than Klamath Falls. Aa Klam ath Falls and Medford battled to a scoreless tie, Bend Is therefore 31 points better than Medford. A guy In Ashland once, though, figured out that the SONS were 103 points stronger than Notre Dame, by com parative scores. It waa all down In black and white and correct, to be lieve In this comparative score busi ness If you want. None of It for ours.
