Wilklns, attorney, entered ft plea of guilty to driving an auto while under the Influence of Intoxicating liquor, and was sentenced by Circuit Judge H. D. Norton, to serve three months In the county Jail, and pay a fine of S160, this morning, A plea for leniency made by Attor ney George A. Codding for WUklns, and unopposed by the district attor ney was denied by the court. The de fendsnt also spoke In his own behalf. Attorney Codding asked that his cli ent be given a suspended sentence and permitted to use his auto, so he eould continue his only source of livelihood legs practice. "The public expects a higher stand ard of ethics from attorneys, than others, and this court Is in accord with this view," tttt court said, In .passing bentence." There Is a tendency among lawyers to 'peas over and 'whitewash' the offense of fellow at torneys, and I don't know as X blame them. However, If the court grants leniency for Mr. WUklns, the public expects lesser penalties. So this Is necessary, unless the courts close up shop, and permits the highways to . become death-traps," The court said It had known Wll . kins "for nearly SO years, and never .knew he partook of liquor." In conclusion, the court said, "a .sentence less than you deserve has been Imposed." wilklns was Indicted by the grand Jury. The state police report showed that on the night of September 18 last, Wilklns had driven his auto Into the Coy service station at Gold Hill, striking a gas pump, and narrowly m (suing the attendant. For this of- - fense, he was found guilty by a Gold Hill justice court Jury, and fined ISO and costs. Later the matter was re ferred to the grand Jury, and a drunk en driving charge preferred.
