"In one year," Bayly says, "7,30 cars wore Involv ed In accidents due to punctures or blowouts of worn tires; 9,760 were involved In mishaps due to one or both headlights falling or lights being Improperly adjusted; 8.840 came to grief because tall lights were out or obscured: 11.890 were damaged or wrecked because of skidding; 18.600 I.L0YO BAYLY were in accidents caused by defective brakes; 3,500 met accident due to various failures of equipment. Only 28 percent of cars examined by In spectors were found to be in good driving condition. "These facts reveal the main -reason for the Wlnterproof inspection campaign Inaugurated by Mobllgas and Moblloll service stations." It Is pointed out that inspection Is essential to reveal the ravages of summer driving, which does things to cars. It Is also pointed out that change from summer heat to winter cold imposes entirely different de mands on cars, necessitating careful checkup, flushing of radiator, crank case, gas tank, fuel lines, transmis sion and differential, and use of lub ricants created to meet winter weather conditions. featured as a free service In Mobllgas stations." To assure motorists the safety, proper performance, comfortable rid ing and attractive appea r ft n of their cars for th colder days ahead, operators of Mobllgas and Moblloll service stations through out this area t ' tT -J nave started a ;mjy great "prepare by offering free Inspection service of all cars driven Into their places of business for lubrication "Everything visible about a car," says Albert E. Horn, Jr., Oregon di vision general manager for General Petroleum corporation, "comes under the eagle eye and experienced hands of the Mobllgas station man during this free -examination Wlnterproof Ing period. "These Inspections assure safe, comfortable, care-free, economical operation of cars during the cold weather period, and also reduce oper- , atlon and maintenance costs to the minimum." Tires, battery, lights, windshield swipes, spark plugs, body bolts, fan belt and oil filter are among the things that come under this careful scrutiny. It is explained. It Is also stated that critical examination and flushing of radiators, strainers and fuel lines, gasoline tank, crankcase, transmission, differential, and other . Important parts, are Included. "One of the factors stressed In the interests of motorists." continues the Mobllgas and Moblloll executive, "it that heavy summer oil and grease should be replaced with lighter lubri cants to guard against undue fric tion, drag or resultant mechanical difficulties. "It Is shown by records that a large percentage of accidents and many repair bills are the direct re sult of carejessness or thoughtless ness in car upkeep. In order that winter motorists may run no risks, in order that their cars may perform at peak efficiency, at the lowest coat of upkeep, our Wlnterproof ing plan has been Inaugurated, similar in pur pose and operation to the Summer Ulng plan which proved so popular In this area last spring. "Because of the busy travel days ahead, when cars will be put to addi tional strain, due to cold, damp weather, this plan should be deserv edly popular." AT VISION TEST OMAHA, Neb. (AP) Belle Ryan, assistant superintendent of schools, confounded clerks In the auto license testing bureau when she was asked to read an optical chart 25 feet away. She did so rspldly and correctly, as the clerk learned when he walked forward and squinted at the letters. "That's impossible," the clerk de clared. "Human vision can't be that good. You're not supposed to be able to read the entire chart." Miss Ryan walked out with air air of triumph, not revealing she could have recited the letters in total dark ness with equal facility. Because of long experience in school work, aha knew the chart by heart. Three percent of the adult popula tion of the United States have gradu ated from college and another four percent have attended some college.
