Beneath a pelting rain that dead ened (airways and greens and soak ed 122 golfers to their skins, the ninth annual southern Oregon northern California golf tournament moved Into the quarter-finals yes terday afternoon at the Rogue Val ley Oolf club with favorites coming through about as expected. . At 10:30 this morning, the eight surviving shotmakers In the champ ionship flight will tee off for semi final positions, which will be staged at 1:30 this afternoon. The 38-hole finals will be played tomorrow morning and afternoon. Quarter-final matches this morn ing will see Med ford 's Lelaud Clark Jr., facing big Bob Hammond, an other local Btar; Don Thompson, Portland favorite, meeting Ivan Har rington of Medford; defending Champion Eddie Simmons of Med ford playing Hank Prlngle of Med ford: and Hubert Bentley, great shotmaker from Ashland, meeting BUI Selkirk, the Yreka, Cal., club ber. Eddie Simmons, shooting the fin est golf of the day. entered the quarter-finals yesterday afternoon by downing Bill Goodwin of Eu gene, S and 4. The champion was 2 under par when the match ended on the 14th, later whamming over the first nine in 35, one below per fect figures, Iceland Clark Jr.. medalist, elim inated lanky Jean Eberhart of Ash land, 7 and 6 for the most decisive margin enjoyed by a winner during the championship flight. Another pre -tournament favorite. Don Thompson of Portland, posted a 4 and 2 win over Bob Wood of Phoe nix to advance to the quarter finals. Other championship flight matches yesterday afternoon saw Bob Ham mond of Medford beat Dr. B. Q. BarkwlU of Marshfleld. 7 and 6; Ivan Harrington of Medford whip Dick Sleeter of Medford. 1 up on the 19th: Hank Prlnkle of Medford eliminate John Koke of Eugene, 2 and 1: Hubert Bentley of Ashland oust George Harrington of Medford. 4 and 2: and Bill Selkirk of Yreka defeat W. Jewett of Eugene, 2 up. - Don Clark, tournament director, announced that a scotch foursome would be staged tomorrow morning about 0:30 with prizes donated by Leonard and Alfred Carpenter. Quarter-final matches In all seven flights will also be shot this morn ing with the semi-finals being stag ed this afternoon. Finals will be held tomorrow. Consolation matches for first round losers In all nights will also get under way today.
