PAGE TEN TirEDFORO M ATT, TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON1. WEDNESDAY. JULY 28, 1937. OF III ME Latest Undersea Craft Are More Durable, Better Divers, Navy Men Concur Crews Are Reduced BAN DrEGO, Cal. (UP) Submar ines, capable of diving to a deptb of 600 feet with safety far deeper than any other such craft ever constructed have given the U. navy the most deadly undersea fight ers In the world. It Is believed here. A newly developed, highly resist- ant metal makes possible the greater diving depth of the new craft, and at the same time allows construc tion of submarines considerably smaller In actual size but decidedly more effective. These facts were revealed here when the U. 8. 8. tarpon, newest member of the navy's submarine force, docked here to Join the flot illa or grlm-looKlng, ebony hued fighters. Heretofore no submarine has been capable of descending to a depth of mucn more than 800 or 400 feet with safety. Although the Tarpon ana sister snips, now under con struction, or undergoing final tests, never have descended to a 600-foot depth officers and men aboard the craft are confident they could with stand such a dive "If necessity re quired. Quarter Inch Hulls ine newiy developed metal, with Its greater tensile strength and high er degree of durability, has mado It possible to construct the new fleet-type submarines with a hull only one-quarter of an Inch thick compared to two Inches necessary with former types steel. It was said. Although the 600-foot length Is considerably less than that of the U. 8. 8. Nautilus, which boasts of outstanding performance records, the U. 8. 8. Tarpon Is even more efficient than the larger craft, and carries a considerably smaller crew. A crew of 60 men and five officers operate the Tarpon. Numerous new ly developed automatlo controls make the reduction In personnel possiDie,. according to Lieut. O'Bnea. engineering officer of the submarine. Details of the new metal as well as the controls are closely guaraoa navy secrets. smaller alze has not made the Tarpon prey to heavy seas, and she s as stable as an ocean liner, Lieut. O'Shea said, In commenting or me cruising anility of the craft, which recently oompleted the long voyage irom tne east coast alone. Six other submarines, of the Tar pon class, now are nearlng com pic tion the Peroh. Plunger, Pickerel Pompano, Pollack and Permit. An other six will be completed during tne usoai year starting July 1 the txumon, seal, snlpjack, Snappor, oungray and sturgeon. Silent on Defects Officers aboard the Tarpon refused to discuss reports carried In the Army and Navy Register a aeml-of- licial publication, which told of me- onarucal defects uncovered In the generators of the main propelling plant of their vessel, and three sis ter subs, the Sharp, Porpoise end Pike. Jt was said discovery of these d. fects, during shakedown cruises and trial runs would keep the new sub marines on a reduced operating sta tus until they are overcome. The submarines Cnchalot and Cut tlefish, now are In the Mare Island navy yard, undergoing overhauling prior to being re-englned during June. During the flsonl year 1038 the submarine force of the navy will be Increased to 48 undorsea fighters. It was said, the majority of which are comparatively new, modern, and among the most powerful craft of their type In the world.
