STNDAT. .TTLY 25, 1937 Four Chrysler Airflow wi ' now taurine the country giving demon strations of the fflclency of the Goodyear Llfeauard tube In pre venting serious consequences when tire U blown out or otherwise sud denly deflated. The Airflow wss considered an Ideal car on which to demonstrate thl new ssfety leature because 1U design incorporates so many other safety features. In the first place, the Airflow has an integral body and frame con struction In which the passengers are completely surrounded by the tram Instead of riding on It. They are In effect placed within a box made of steel girders extending from front bumper to tail light. Scientific weight distribution, a low center of gravity and perfect balance also con tribute to the Airflow's safety. The car is equipped with Chrysler's time tested hydrauUo brakes and with safety glass throughout. With the UfeOuard tubs, It baa a fourth great safety factor to add to Its staunch steel body, perfect brakes and non shatterable glass. The UfeOuard la In effect a tire within tire. When the outer cas ing Is punctured so that the air escapes Instantly from the regular tube, the UfeOuard or Inner tire re tains Us pressure long enough to en able the driver to bring the ear to a smooth, safe stop, no matter at what speed he might have been trav eling when the deflation occurred. The ear retains its balance end Its steering ability despite the puncture. In fact, the driver hardly Is conscious of any difference In the way it re sponds to the wheel. In the demonstratlona now being given, tires are blown out by means of dynamite caps and sharp Knives or spokes placed on the roadway. Testa are made at speeds of aa high as 85 miles an hour, which would mean a serious accident in many eases if ordinary tubes were used. With UfeOuards, however, the worst blowout becomes no more serious thsn a alow leak and the car Is easily brought to a stop even on the nar rowest road. j These tests are being conducted in conjunction with the police depart menu of the vajloua cities visited. Both men have been retained by the Shell Oil Company to heir solva America's growing traffic flow problems. (MOBILE CHIEF IN SAFETY EFFORT, With traffic haurda - Increased throughout the country during warm weather month due to a larger num ber of vehicle on American highways, D. E. Ralston, general sales manager of Oldamobtle, emphasizes the Im portance to the motorist of keeping bis car In the best possible running condition. "If the average motorist would do all In his power to maintain bis car In the condition It was furnished by the manufacturer, we would see a, level ing of the accident curve which al ways rises at this time of year," Mr. Ralston points out. "Automobile manufacturers for a number of years heve done all In their power to provide cars that are as safe as possible; that la why today we have safety glass, super-hydraulic brakes, better visibility and lighting facili ties; Unisteel Turret Top bodies, and other features designed to promote safety. These features are largely wasted, however, unless they are properly looked after by the driver. And the driver's mental condition, logically enough, is Just tut Important a sa-fety feature as the many mechanical de velopments Introduced by car manu facturers." Mr. Ralston explains that only a very small percentage of serious acci dents have been traced by police of ficials to mechanical failure of ve hicles, whereas a larger number have been directly traceable to driver neg ligence, either at the time of an ac cident or in not keeping his car in the best possible running order. "The best brakes that automotive Urwlneerfi have ben able to design I) k :rw ' ! I ;qiijtig aWMaSalaSs?'! Jfl Complete In every detail with the distant roar of Hons, the incessant chattering; oi innumerable jungle birds and the steady rhythmical throb of the torn torn, the huge diorama at the Firestone Exhibit depicting a typical scene on the Firestone Plantations in Liberia, West Africa, is one of the most outstanding displays at the Great Lake Exposition thla year. Pur latex actually flows front genuine robber tree which have been shipped directly to Cleveland from darkest Africa. Mechanical natives demonstrate the various operations necessary to collect, coagulate and ship the crude rubber to Firestone Factories all over the world. E are of no use to a driver unless he applies those brakes in time," Mr. Ralston admonishes, "Likewise those brakes are of no use to the driver if he allowed them to become unequal or otherwise out of adjustment or repair." Good braking facilities often are Impaired by worn tires or worn brake linings. Likewise a burned out head lamp often is the cause of a collision. A windshield wiper that worked when the car left the factory Is no good If it is allowed to fall Into disuse through negligence. Car windows de signed for increased visibility are no good if cluttered with stickers or mud and grease spots. A safe steering mechanism improperly adjusted ' or not properly tightened becomes less safe. Manufacturers have done and are doing all in their power to provide the public with safe transportation facilities, Mr. Ralston concludes. Un less safe and conscientious motorists mske the proper use of these modern vehicles, however, the manufacturer's efforts will be' largely wasted. "Now la the time of the year for every car owner to look to his car, to see that It is in the best possible running condition. Nat only will this provide him a safer automobile but it will in many Instances save lives and future hospital and repair bills." 4- Berries Pass Peak.
