PAOE SEVEN CLARK, WILL SEEK PLACE IN GOLF CLASSIC Inland Clark and Bob Hammond, Jr.. two of southern Oregon' most brtniant golfers, will leave Medford Sunday morning for Portland to en tar the district qualifying round for the National Amateur golf champion tblp to be played over the Alderwood Country club course In August. The district qualifying round will be staged in Portland next Tuesday. Clark and Hammond both have 3 handicaps. Between 40 and 60 of Oregon's fin et amateurs are expected to enter - the qualifying round Tuesday. En tries and pairings for the 30 -hole medal play will be announced to morrow. Players qualifying for the National Amateur are based on the number of entries In the qualifying round, and the number to be allotted for the championship proper will be announced at the time of the pair ings. It la expected that the five or six low scorers will be named to enter the battle for amateur golf oom'i most coveted prize the na tional championship. The qualifying round In Portland Tuesday will be one of many held In ail parts of the United States on the same day. Prom these quali fying rounds, the cream of America's amateurs will then meet at Portland's Alderwood Country club In August. Between 180 and 300 golfers are ex pected to compete. Although the qualifying rounds will be on a medal basis, the championships will be staged under match play rules. The two local golfers have for sev eral yeara been ranked near the top of southern Oregon golf. Himmond twice won the southern Oregon northern California championship, blue-ribbon tournament of this sec tion, and Clark has been near the top many times. Hammond's title years were 1029 and 1931. Last year Hammond defeated Clark one up in the tournament over the Rogue Val ley fairways. Both have been practicing Intensely for the tournament, and announce that they are near top form. Although all amateurs In good standing and members of a club which is a member of the United States Oolf association are eligible to compete In the qualifying round pro vided they have a handicap of 4 or less. It was said today that Ham mond and Clark would be the only entries from Med ford. 442 GOLFERS TO SEEK HUGE PURSE CHICAGO, July 32. JP A stag gering entry of 443 golfers every sort from the hottest of money players to Just plain swingers will start out tomorrow over two Med 1 nan Country club courses In the $10,000 Chicago open. The field, biggest ever to enter a major event, includes 338 profession als and 304 amateurs The entry list might have been even larger. A halt was called last night by officials of the sponsoring Chicago District Oolf association, however, when Tommy Armour, Me dlnah's professional, offered to bet 30 to 1 that a lot of starters wouldn't be able to complete the Initial 18- bole assignment before dark. An additional 35 players, Including two former open tltleholdera, Billy Burke and Sam Parks, Jr., and the 1936 western amateur champion, Paul Leslie of Jefferson City, Mo., and Louisiana State university, were per mitted to enter yesterday before the tournament committee decided that enough was enough.
