MEDFORP MAIL TRIBUNE. BEDFORD. OREGON. THURSDAY. JULY 13. 1937. PAOE KITE SCHOOL PATRONS DISCUSS MERGER BIO APPLEOATZ, July 15. (Spl) Several meetings are being sched uled this month lor discussion of plans for possible consolidation or the Sterling. Forest Creek, and Llt'le Applegate schools with the Ruch school. C..R. Bowman, county school superintendent, met at Ruch Friday with patrons of that district and the Sterling school, at which time he gave a thorough explanation of all angles to be considered In consolida tion. In addition to these hsndlcapa some of their pupils arc obliged to walk long distances to school. Similar conditions exist at Little Applegate and Forest Creek, it was pointed out. It Is proposed to have a two-room school at Ruch, should consolidation be effected. In order to familiarize everyone concerned with all details of the sit uation and to obtain the sentiment of the voters in the districts before the question is put to a vote, a meet ing wilt be held at Ruch Monday evening. July 26. Everyone interested Is urged to attend. FRUIT I CASE IS SETTLED Amicable adjustment of the case of Howard Warner, fruit inspector. was made yesterday afternoon at a meeting of the county court, whereby Warner continuea in the position he has held for many year, and will receive an Increase In mileage fees during the busy aeason. Certain membera of the Prult Growers league, several weeka ago re quested that an Investigation be made of the system under which Warner was operating. Other fruit men circulated petitions requesting that Warner be retained. There was never any question relative to the qualltv of Warner work, but the method of doing it. Members of the county court and the county agent's office aald that an agreeable solution had been reached, and a better understanding between all concerned would result. A number of fruit growers, headed by J. C. Barnes and Gordon Kershaw, attended the se.ss.on with petitions in Warner's behalf. boraea. If the country agreed, he would alt tight. The flat assurance that the presi dent does not want to run Is made In the face of plenty of surface indi cations that be would enjoy the Job more or less permanently. First, he has the physical stamina for It. According to his physicians he Is In better health than when he came to the White House. He like the active life. But In spite of alt thla external evidence, a tt might be called, he's going to step down at the end ot hta second term, like his predecessors. unless The first catastrophe that might stop htm. as the president aeee U. Is war. That this question is not an academic one to President Rooseveit can be gathered from hta recent let ter to the institute of public affairs at the University of Virginia: "As Americans, it must be clear to us that a continuation of .the existing uncertainties in the inter natlonsl sphere la highly prejudicial to the well-being of the United States. It must be evident that an accentuation of this unsettled con dition will bring disaster and human suffering beyond the mind of man to grasp. Catastrophe No. 2 (the one at home) that might force Mr. Roose velt Into a third term Is already en visaged by many in the labor situa tion. Right now, organised labor ta split In two, which makes It that much harder for the government to deat with lta leaders. Moreover, the tactics of Mr. Lewis have been followed by a reaction which has made it possible to organ ire sentiment on the part of the mlddle-claas against strikes, at leaat of the type the C. I. p. haa called, which threatens class antagonism. Either one of these two develop ment might by 1940 be so diverting the country from the course which the president bellevea Is Its salvation that he would feel compelled to stay In the driver seat. Why. If the president doesn't want : to run, doesn't he say so? Because that would violate rule No. 1 of the executive who want to keep hi leadership. A flat statement now that he was out of the race would atart half a docen candidate running their own show, congress would forget there waa a White House. How does the president read the news? The answer is, he doesn't. t least not as the "average reader" does. Hla secretaries clip items they think might interest him. they Include news stories, editorials, the contribu tions -ol certain columnists. But aa for skimming through the newspaper, there Isn't much time for that, even on a week-end cruisr when, as last time, he had a 800- page technical report to read, his "letter to the chairmen of house and senate agriculture committees" :o potiih up art! he message accom panying his veto of the farm loan bill. The president seldom read Wall Street or sporta news. $alcm Deer MmtmmiMMm.r-&(imm wmfo3ht$&HMwmmmvm niimai ii&Mlv- rtn-nnrmirtsssswsiiiiiisiiiiiiis. n n - - r in 1 PTM (kJJ u (CoDtinueo Mom Page One) Article of Incorporation of the Southern 6regon Restaurant associa tion wr filed vesterdav with the county clerk, with Maude F. UNIFORllffitlFOR RELIEF AIDES AGREED The Jackson county relief commit tee, of which A. 8 V. Carpenter Is chairman, and the county court a member, met yesterday with Elmer R. Goudy, state relief administrator, and approved of the plan to estab lish uniform titles and salaries for office workers In Oregon counties. The purpose Is to eliminate current misunderstanding among the work ers as to conditions elsewhere and to avoid confusion by having differ ent titles in different counties. This was the principal matter before the session. No action was taken on appoint ment of an executive secretary to take the place of MlsS Otis Brown who resigned recently. In the field ot labor and Industry. or In International affairs, which might threaten to destroy the New Deal's achievements as the great war destroyed Woodrow Wilson's new free. dom. In such a case, the president feels It wouldn't be the moment to swap OREGON CITY, July 15.
