Newman, of Colonel Bar gent Camp, convention hosts, who also Introduced Department Com mander Hugh S. Rogers. Parade Staged Previous to the Joint session at the Rlalto theatre, a colorful parade of the Department Auxiliary left city park at 9 a. m. and moved down Main street to Central, and thence to the Elks temple. At the temple, OPENED BY CCC ment Auxiliary was held, with De partment President Millie Hall pre aiding. The parade waa led by the Med ford high school drum corpa and band, and included 31 Auxiliary eampa from all parte of Oregon. The 11-plece band end drum corpa of Camp Soott Young number 3 of Portland also took part in the pa' rade. Following the meeting, the Auxiliary campa marched to the Rlalto theatre for the joint aeaalon with the Department U. 8. W. V. Joint memorial aervlcea In the First Presbyterlsn church laat night featured the opening day of the four day encampment, The memorial address waa given by Department Chaplain f. a. Shaw. The aervlcea opened with an organ prelude, and the entire gathering singing "America." The church waa filled to eapaclty. The Rev. Sherman L. Divine gave the opening prayer, and the Rev. E. S. Bartlnm gave a scripture reading. Introductory re mark, were made by Department Commander Hugh S. Rogers and De partment Auxiliary President Millie Hall following a solo by Edna Elfert, "No Night There." Remember Departed Reading of names of deceased com rades by Department Registrar Tho mas C. Bodley and reading of names of deceased sisters by Department Secretary Orace Faust followed, and after the placing of flowers by De portment Auxiliary Chaplain Jane Monroe, tile sorvtces were brought to a close by Chief of Musicians Henry Barron sounding tape. It was announced today thst Capt. O. I. Ovormyer would lead the huge Joint parade of the Snalx tomorrow evening at eight o'clock. Hotels and rooming houses were packed today and restaurants were doing a land office business as Med ford oponed Ita arms to the living heroes of the Spanish-American war and their families and frlenda. Veter ans snd wives with graying hair were Medford COO district's annual Red Cross water flrat-sld and llfa-ssvlnj school opened today here and In Ash land with 47 men enrolled. Lieut. Henry H- Marsden, Jr., who conducted last year's school, la agsln In chsrge. He Is being assisted by Ueut. Marcus H. Muller. Both hold Red Cross life-saving examiners' cer tificates. Two men from esch of the district's 33 csmps snd one from hesdqusrters detachment are enrolled. Each morn ing the group will work out st the Twin Plunges In Ashlsnd snd each afternoon will meet for class study st hesdqusrters detachment here. Capt. William C. Ryan, district wel fare officer, formally opened the school at Ashland this morning. He announced that prises will be award ed to the two men making the best showing In the school work, and oth er prizea will be posted for the dem onstrations and aquatic sports to bo stsged Saturday evening as part of the "Orcater Ashlsnd" celebration. Men who qualify In the Hod cross school wilt return to their campa and conduct almllar schools during the summer. Forest Creek The Grange ASSISTANT CHIEF E Charles Taylor of Washington. D. C. assistant director of the civilian conservation corps Is expected to ar rive here tonight on an official visit. Mr. Taylor will be accompanied by Kenneth Wolfe of San Francisco. Mason officer, and L. B. Pagtcr of Portland, assistant to the regional chief of CCC work for the United States forest service. The men are scheduled to visit CCC and Roguo river national forest headquarters here tomorrow morn ing. They are to leave In the after noon for Klamath Falls and Crater Lake national park whence they will continue to Rose burg. Stanley Chestnut who with his son Psul has been employed at Ster ling the past two months, sustained a leg Inqury at the mine July while working on a piece of hydraulic pipe with a cold chisel. A fragment of steel from either pipe or chisel became deeply Imbedded In the flesh of his thigh. A number of X-ray and a minor operation were required to remove It.
