Pin vritv snsn Pictorial - The press release of June 23 indi cated that the Public Lands commit tee of the house bad taken unfavor able action regarding the wishes of the Land Orend counties and had passed the department of the interior bill in its original form. This was an error, and we have today received confirmation that the committee has voted favorably to recommend the amendments to the bill for which the counties had contended, County Judge Day said Saturday. 'The counties did not contest, and in fact approved, Title I of the bill with certain minor amendments which were agreed upon. Title I stipulated that the government, through the Interior department, should handle the timber on these lands In harmony with the sustained yield idea. This is necessary and de sirable in order that the property may not be dissipated and that the revenue to the counties will be per petual. "The counties did not agree with the percentages stipulated in Title II of the bill, which gave the counties only 60 per cent; 25 per cent for ad ministrative purposes, and 35 per cent to be credited, to the fund In order to retire the deficit of some 98.000,000. It was our purpose to safe guard aa nearly as possible a yearly amount due the counties, which would approximate the amount the counties would have received in taxes had the lands remained In private ownership. If the yearly cut and the stumpage value amounted to as much as it would under present atumpage values, and if the cut was up to the maximum of the sustained yield ca pacity of the lands, the counties would not be much hurt on a 50 per cent basis. But If. during unusual economic conditions and depressed values, the total annual revenue from the lands were seriously reduced, it Is more desirable that an additional percentage be given to the counties and a corresponding reduced amount. credited to the deficit In order that L. v K7- ul Satirizing the innumerable con tests In which American housewives are constantly participating, "Meet the Missus," co-starring Victor Moore and Helen Broderlck, comes to the Rialto theater Wednesday, topping Ihe twin bill that will also have "Un der the Red Robe."' featuring Anna bella and Conrnd Veldt, as the second ft. "An agreement, therefore, was ft nally reached with the department of the interior whereby. If necessary, an additional 15 per cent above the 50 per cent should be given to the coun ties on such years In order to bring the revenue for that particular year up to 390.000. or as near that amount as the additional 15 per cent would bring. After the deficit Is re tired, all the revenue above adminis tration charge will go to the counties. The executive committee of the Land Grant counties feel very well satisfied with the bill as finally amended, and feel that the whole (but not the kind you read in books) IS MADE AT NIGHT!
