Figured at the start of the campaign the toughest club In the circuit, the lumber town boys have not only failed to live up to that rating, but have dropped three straight battles without copping one. The reason for the poor show ing, to date, of last year's great club can probably be summed up with one word pitching. Or rather, the lark of It. Merle Johnson, league strikeout king last season, fatted to report to "Papa" Olpe this spring. As a re sult, the Glendale skipper has been forced to use what he has on hanci, which Isn't much. Alvln Merrltt. the former Medford Junior American Legion hurler who started with the Craters but shagged off to Qlendale where he procured employment, was expected to help the Loggers' ailing pitching situation, but after working the first game, contracted a sore arm and hasn't seen service on the mound since. All told, the Glendales have used five hurlers In their three league gamea, and each has a different moniker. In addition to Merrltt, Frank "Speed ball" Thompson has had a try at flinging them over, and so have Miller, Olpe himself, and Law rence. The latter worked the full game against Crescent City last Sun day, and according to Ralph Deo, Gull manager, didn't look bad at all, although walking eight. He allowed seven hit,' which against a heavy slugging club like Crescent City, doesn't seem so dusty. The payoff on the whole busi ness though Is the appearance of Glpe himself on the mound. Jake was all through with active ser vice ten years ago, and he knows It. So when Jake and his "noth ing" ball appears In the box for Glendale, It Is proved beyond a doubt that a desperate need for pitchers exists In the best draw ing town In the circuit. Man for man, with the exception of the pitching staff, the Logers have almost the Identical team that nearly upset the champion Klamath Red Sox least year. Nor Is It batting power they lack. In three games, the Loggers have hacked out 82 safe ties which Is better than 10 a battle, and are second only to Grants Pass tn team batting with a mark of .371. The Merchants top all with an aver age of .303. Give Glendale a steady pitcher and they will be the team to beat, is the concensus among managers and players in the lenfue. And we don't doubt It. While on the subject of team bat ting averages, a peculiar fact Is re vealed In figuring the whys snd wherefores of such snd such a team being in whatever position In the standings It Is In. Roeeburg. leading the circuit with three wlna and no losses. Is no bet ter than fifth In team batting. In 119 times at bat, Pirate hitters have collected 25 htta for a combined mar of ,310. Ashland, in fourth place in the standings, U also fourth In team hitting with an average of .241 from 36 hits In 108 trips to the platter. Crescent City, tied with toseburg for the league lead, is third In bat ting with an average of .356. Mod ford, sharing the oellar with Olen dale. Riverside. Phone 102 vtck. The Craters have garnered 13 safeties lc 62 trips for s .104 mark. So, the Importance of good , pitching Is attain revealed In the batting atertiRek. Roneburg. next to Is.t In bitting, leads the lea gue In the standings bet-ause of strong hurling. And Glendale. deep In the basement, Is second In batting, which Is of no value because of no pitching to go : with It. I Mulling over e above statistics. ; it might be figured that we are try ing to say that pitching Is more Im portant than bitting. On the faoe of things. It appears that It Is. in this case, anyway. However, last year's world's series Is still too fresh in mind to come out with a flat statement to the effect that a team with great pitchers will beat a team with great bitters. The Giants, led by Carl Hubbell, had the pitching and the Yanks, led by several guys, had the hitting. We favored the Giants because many smart fellows told us all about the "good pitching versus good hitting" business. Our pocket book Is Just now recovering, snd since then we have decided on a sure formula for winning ball games. It Isget eight .350 hitters and at least five 30-vlc-tory pitchers, and pray. BATTLE ROYAL OR GRAPPLING GENTS; ON MONDA For the first time stnoe grappling was resumed in the Medford armory In January after a short layoff, Pro moter Mack LlUard will stage a battle royal. Wrestling gentlemen who will engage tn the brawl Monday night are Pete Belcastro, Joe Smoltnskl, Sailor Dick Trout. Alvln Brttt. Sam my Feeback and Jimmy Ooodrlch. The battle royal wont' end things for the evening, however. Tn fact, It appears that It will only be a taster for plenty of sensational buM ness to follow. Meeting in the open ing event will be the first two gladi ators eliminated In the free-for-all. The next two huskies licked will take part In the middle event, and the remaining pair will then lake a walk and return In time for the main bout, a one-hour time limit affair. Since the announcement of the battle royal yesterday, there has been much conjecture in Iocs, grappling circles as to Just what will happen when four clean fellows like Brltt, Feeback, Goodrich and Trout get vtlllans like Belcastro and Smollnakl In the same ring with them at the same time. One school of thought holds that the Messrs. Smoltnskl and Belcastro will last no time at all; that they will be ganged in short order snd dtsposed of In even shorter order, probably via the "sailing over the ropes and Isndtng In the second row ringside" method. However, many local customers figure that the four "cleanles" will leave Belcastro snd SmollnskI to their own devices. It Is no secret that Pete and Joe have little regard for each other, and certain fans believe that once the two get In the same ring at the same time, plenty of fire works will occur, with the four gen tlemen of the brigade standing calm ly by as the two hated meanles tight it out. A special Incentive to the six grap piers is held out by Promoter Mack LI Hard to give good accounts of themselves In the announcement that Cowboy Dude Chick, Junior heavy weight champion of the world, will appear In Medford a week from Mon day. Chick, according to the grap pling impressarlo, will meet the most outstanding performer on Monday's program. APPLEGATE FARMERS TROUNCED BY CCC IN BIG APPLEGATE, May 21.(Spl.) An athletic maneuver, which the local farmers' team readily admitted could hardly be classed as a ball game, was staged on the Palmer creek baseball diamond Sunday, when the farmers played the CCC nine from Camp Applegate and lost, 21 to 1 In seven Innings. The disgraceful trouncing was laid to the fact thst the farmers have been farming Instead of practicing ball, whereas, the Missouri boys have a brand new diamond at camp, and secure dally practice. However, the farmer boys are courageous, and have scheduled a game with the Medford Christian Endeavor nine .next Sun day on the local field. A minor accident occurred on the grounds when a foul ball struck F. J. Rlppey as he prepared to roll a cigarette.
