Grants Pass at Ashland. Dedication of the newly planted turf field at the high achool next Sunday, featuring a Southern Ore gon league battle between the Med ford Craters and Olendale Loggers was postponed yesterday. The ball game will be transferred to Olen dale, Medford Athletic association officials announced. After a look at the new grass, which was soaked by the rain early this week, E. H. Hedrlck, city school sup erintendent, and association heads decided It would be still too wet to play on by Sunday. The field will be oflclally dedicated along with Medford'a home schedule with the appearance of the league-leading Roseburg pirates here June ' Pepper on Mound. . Larry Pepper, young righthander with the swooping curve ball, will at tempt to hurl the Craters out of the cellar against the Loggers Sunday. Pepper, greatly Improved from last sesaon, fanned seven out of nine Aahlanders last Sunday and Is ex pected by Manager Mike Balkovlck to break the craters Into the win column. Ray Erlckaon, who started both the Oranta Pass and Ashland gsmes, In jured hla snkle during practice Wed nesday, but will probably be suf ficiently recovered by Sunday to fling bis fast ball and sharp ourve over If needed. Ray Tungate, Medford's third pitcher, Is slowly rounding Into shape after a late start and will be ready to take hla place on the mound soon, Manager Balkovlck announced. Lineup In Doubt. Beaet by Infield dlflcultlea since the loss of Donovan to Hilt of the Northern California circuit, the huge skipper has been attempting to dls cover smooth-clicking quartet of t rounder-grabbers. With Dick Lewis at shortstop the only fixture, the manager has been trying out several playera at each of the other three positions, and la still undecided about the opening lineup Sunday. . . It may be the same that worked agalnat Ashland last Sunday Hoff man on flrat, Swanson on second, Lewis at ahort and Rlckert on third. Or, Balkovlck may twitch Swanson either to flrat or to the outfield, Hoffman to third with Rlckert mov ing back to hit old tecond bass pott. Dick Skeetert, the 19-year-old Talent high player, It figured a keystone sack possibility. In the outfield. Malcolm Stlne and Dick Sskralda will atart In left and center respectively. Right field Is stIU a matter of conjeoture, with Ray Lewis. Oeorge Oltcen. Bwsnson in case he Is switched or Tully Knox drawing the ssalgnment. Balkovlck to Catcb. Catching duties will be handled by Manager Mike Balkovlck. Lack of batting power In their two league battles hss proved the prln clpsl Crster weakness. Heavy drills on the srt of slugging basehlta will be the order of the day this after noon and tomorrow. Balkovlck said. All players are asked to report at the fairgrounds field at A p. m. Other league clashes will tee Grants Psss traveling to Ashlsnd to tangle with the Llthlans. and Crescent City moving to Roseburg for a gsme that will name the undisputed leader. B 14 By Sid Feder Associated Press Sports Writer The whole thing doesn't make as n.uch sense as an Insane asylum, but the figures show the American league la off to a closer and more completely unlooked for atart than It has been la years. By the end of the first month last year, five games separated f.'rst and fourth place. This season, the race was regarded as New York. Detroit, Cleveland and nothing much else. But so far It's been as tight as a mus tard plaster so close In fact, that only 4 games separate the lenders of the moment, Cleveland's Indians, from the cellar riding St. Louis Browns, Athletics Big Surprise And most astonishing of all Is that the longest of the long shots, Connie Mack's mystifying Athletics, are In second place, lending both the Yankee and the Tigers. They were on top until yesterday, but the In dians licked the tar out of the Bos ton Red Sox. 16-6. while the A's dropped a 3-2 decision to the Tigers, which gave the tribe the place by a percentage margin. Hottest of all right now' are the reviving Washington Senators and their sudden form reversal Is Just as explainable as the rest of the league's ways. Although their pitch ing still Is In a sorry state, they arc starting to hit, and on thlB strength alone have won their last four Btmlght to climb from eighth to fifth. It took two twlrlcrs and 12 innings before they finally overcame the Browns yesterday 0-4 on Osle Blue's timely single. Thornton Lee found out the Yanks are still hla "ensy meat."
