MEDFORD MAIL TRTBWE. MEDFORD, OREGON. SUNDAY. MAY 2. 1937 PAGE SEVEN AAA. LAUNCHES WASHINGTON. D. C, May 1. Pointing out that motor fatalities In tghty-flve major cities are running twenty-eight per cent ahead of last year, the American Automobile asso ciation said today that affiliated mo tor clubs In all sections are launch ing a vigorous program for strict en forcement of motor laws. "The striking Increase In motor deaths In key cities," said Thos. P. Henry of Detroit, president of the AAA, Indicates that & wave of disre gard for sound driving practices is sweeping the country, it comes on the heels of decided Improvement during all of 1035 In the accident situation in urban as compared with rural areas. Strict enforcement of mo tor laws is absolutely essential to offset a 1037 toll of fatalities that will stagger the country. Obviously, we cannot have adequate enforcement until our cities have sufficient traf fic personnel composed of trained men. Traffic Institutes and training courses offer the logical means for such training." Citing the fact that 2.340 persons were killed In motor crashes occurring In eighty-five major cities during the first sixteen weeks of 1037, at com pared to 1,687 during the same per lor In 1036. the national motoring body said that the Increase of twenty-eight per cent was largely due to fatalities In the greater metropol itan areas. The statement, based on official figures from the U. B. bureau of census, said: "Reports from eighty-five key cities show that sixty-three had a greater number of fatalities during the first sixteen weeks of this year than dur ing the same period of 1936. The In crease was more pronounced in the country's first cities. New York City's total Jumped from 226 to 302. Chi cago had 259 against 181. "Improvement was shown in At lanta, Ga., Miami, 71a.. Seattle. Wash., and St. Louis. Mo., while many small er cities maintained the same level as last year. "Available figures indicate that the Increase In motor deaths on rural highways la about twenty-five per cent ahead of last year. Thus, the accident situation In cities Is again becoming acute, if not more so, than that on the rural highways.', Closing time for Too Late to Clas sify Ads is 1:30 p. m. A house near South Hill.
