Journal,) I SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Nov. 23. Sunday after the Bipf Game and San Francisco is a deserted city. Those who didn't go to the country the night before are Bleeping. No matter where you choose to cat, there is no difficulty as there was 24 hours before in getting served. The waiters are bleary eyed and weary, a person with a desire for food is a rare exception. There must be something queer amout him so he gets the service re served for freaks. There is very little doing, but what is done is in the atmos phere of the morning after the night before. The papers say it was the largest and wettest football celebration on record. We have to take the papers word for it. Your correspondent slept through it or most of.it. There was a slight hiatus, when ubont 3 a. m. the crowds mnrched up and down the hotel halls en route home, and judging by the noise, certain members of the band and cheerinfj section accompanied them. Twenty-five years ago they used to celebrate football games in this ardent sophomoric fashion in the East. They do so no longer. The habit of growing up, like the sun travels from cast to west. In harmony with this burst of editorial self righteousness, we felt disposed to attend church, and eh route there via the! Civic center, discovered that the last grand opera of tin! sea son was to be given at 2 p. m. in the War Memorial Opera House, Wagner's "Die Walkure," with ."Flagstad, Lotte Lehmann, Kathryn Meislc, Mclchoir and Schorr. That suited our mood to a T, and we heard some good church music, and a sermon that was above the average on the lost art of being thankful for our blessings in addition. One reads and hears so much about how everything is going to the eternal bow wows it was rather a re lief to regard the other side of the picture for a while. There is another side, in this country at the present time particularly. After wandering about the deserted city, it was surprising to find the Memorial Opera House on a Sunday afternoon rack ed to the rafters, with scores of nice looking men and women, standing, some of them with cushions to sit on during the in termissions. In spirit and attitude, another sharp contrast, with the Berkeley bowl just 24 hours before. Music and religion arc closely related. The most, bigoted Fundamentalist could not have complained about the spirit of the audience at this per formance of one of Wagners most devout and impressive, mu sical dramas, on the Sabbath Day. A year upo when we happened in San Francisco during. the grand opera season we missed Flagstad she had gone east a week or so before. As is often the case when one's expectations arc high the result was disappointing. Her Brunnhilde was true to tho Wagnerian tradition, her voice powerful and true, but somehow she lacked fire, tho pagan, unearthly souring iinlity, of another Brunnhilde we heard many years ago. On the other hand I;ehmann as Sieglinde appealed to us as superb, her vjicc full of warmth and sympathy and her characterization both graceful and impressive. Miss Meislo was also a pleasant sur prise. But the men well we doubt if there has been a really great basso, since Plancon and De Itcszke and our grand opera education, such as it is, started with the latter. Molclioir as Sieg mund, was good, just as bread and milk is good, but certainly was not inspiring, nor inspired. Not tbnt the views of the present writer are of the least im portance to any one but himself, in a ORITICAIj sense we know no moro about grand opera thaan we do about the LOin stein theory or the Lost Dignmma, but in our travels hither and yon, wo have always commented upon what wo have seen and heard, and wo see no renson at this late date to clinnge our established habit. If tho opinions and comments one hears from day to day and year to yenr strictly confined to those people really QUAUFIKD to express them, my word what a silent place this world would be! As bad as San Francisco on Sunday after the Big Game. nere's another sign of advanced and premature senility no doubt but it is our considered judgment that as far as voices are concerned, grand opera hns not advanced very much, if at. all during the years. In fact wo would say thero had been a de cline since Nordics and Melbn, Schumiinn-Heiuk and Einiiin Earncs, Scotli anil Caruso. But (hero has been vast improvement in stage direction and settings, in the appeal to the eye, as con trasted with the appeal to tho ear. Die Walkuro ns given yester day was most stirring and impressive, purely as a spectacle, and a sort of pre-Christian ceremonial. .., We haven't heard how tho opera here is doing financially but judging by the price we hnd to pay to get on the last roats in the house, the deficit should not only havo been wiped out but there should be a dividend this yenr. Unless we are mis taken the prices have been raised 50 per cent over last year. No doubt only added proof that Koosevelt prosperity IS the real thing. Speaking of Roosevelt, we have talked to some of our few friends here, and all of them were for Landon. At least two of them are still prettv sore and are mumbling about, tho Literary Digest, and how thev can't understand, how that magazine could have been so completely wrong. We have about decided the Landonilcs perhaps aren t such good losers as we first sup posed. The first, question everyone here asks is "have you been over the new bridge? That's one striking thing about San Francis cans their real, novcr-failing pride in their own city. That's one reason perhaps whv nearly everyone the writer included, regards this city on the Golden Gate, as one of the truly great cities in the world. Its MORALh is always so high. Insufficient oxygen supply to the heart muscle; Insufficient, that Is, to meet an emergency de mand under emotional strain of some slight over-exertion. The first remedy for the emergency attack or threat or fear of Impending attack of angina pectoris Is Imme diate cessation of strain, effort or ex ertion. Come to a complete stand still wherever the seizure occurs, and sit down, or better He down If pos sible and remain perfectly quiet. Nitroglycerin (trlnltrln, glonoin, glyceryl nitrate) Is the beat emergency remedy for the attack of angina pec toris. The patient may carry always In pocket a Bmall vial of nitrogly cerin tablets and take a tablet when over he believes an attack impends. Nitroglycerin Is volatile and loses strength If exposed to the air, but a dozen tablets In a stoppered vial will retnln their potency for several weeks The tablets dissolved In the mouth produces Its characteristic effect on the circulation within two or three minutes. Nitroglycerin Is not a heart stimulant at all: It merely relaxes spasm of the arterioles or smallest arteries, and frees the circulation from restriction.
