SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1936 JACK BENNY, ALIEN IN T HIT WALLACE BEERY Headed by Jack Benny, an excep tional cast of entertainers. Including the team of George Burns and Graclt Alien, Bob Burns and hi Bazooka. Martha Raye. Benny Goodman and his swing band. Ray Mllland. Prank Forest, Benny Fields, Leopold Sto kowskl and his symphony orchestra Louis DaPron, Eleanore Whitney Larry Adler. Virginia ("Pigtails" ) Weidler. David Holt and Billy Lee bring "The Big Broadcast of 1037" to the screen of the Oraterlsn thea ter today where It opens Its three day local engagement. Lavishly produced, tuneful, some times madcap and always gay, this ; new edition of the annual "Big Broadcasts" Is expected to top all Its - predecessors In the way of entertain ment. Benny la In the role of a ra dio station manager whose big head ache la to keep Burns and Allen, sponsors of an Important program, happy. And, In so doing, he builds up one big idea after another, in which the country's leading expo nents of different atylea of enter tainment are allowed to "do their stuff." There is "awing" music as played by Goodman and his band, admittedly tops for this brand of tuneful entertainment. And, In ex act opposite, there is the "sweet" style, as provided by Leopold Sto kowskt whose programs over the Sunday Magic Key Hours have be come one of radio's biggest attrac tions. Before the picture Is over, the two orchestras change styles the swing band going to "sweet," and Stokowski's orchestra trying out their hand at Goodman's style. Bob Burns is already well known to picture fans, as is Martha Baye. Both of them recently were shown In "Rhythm on the Range at the Cra terian. Prank Forest Is radio's new voice find and la heard In the pre sentation of some of the song num bers Introduced In the picture. Benny Fields, one of the top-notchers of vaudeville for mtny years and more recently starred over the air waves. Is a whole show by himself. Loutt DaPron and Sleanore Whitney are ad mitted to be the country's "fastest things on feet." Their tapping, nov elty dances are said to be among the picture's highlights. Larry Adler is the young chap whose ability to play a harmonica has lifted htm into the big money class. Adding to the fun Is Oracle's Idea of the greatest idea In radio enter tainment the presentation of Stan Kavanaugh, noted Australian Juggler who never says a word during his yet. Oracle believes she la introduc ing a new style of radio act one whom the audleno8"doesntJeven know Is there. Millions of readers roared at "Old Hutch" when the story appeared in a national magatine. They and addi tional millions will laugh when they see Wallace Beery in the title role, of the film vers-; ton opening Thursday at the! Craterian the-; atre. Beery encompassea the rich per sonal experience of his colorful life time In his characterization of "Old Hutch." Never has he been cast In a role that was better adapted to his peculiar abilities. Beery portrays the Indolent but lovable native who finds a fortune but can't find a way to spend It. When he finally oiscovers that It is stolen money and that he can cap ture the criminals If he can summon the courage. Beery Is said to give a performance that tops anything In bis career of popular roles. There Is strong love Interest In the parts played by Erie Linden and Ce cilia Parker. Also featured In the supporting cast are Robert McWade, Virginia Grey and Donald Meek. Coming On Double Rialto Bill if' 4 VS.jp WVJftJ Legionnaires Plan Program Specialties For Armistice Ball Center of interest for southern Oregon dancing contingent is occu pied this week with the annual Ar mistice Day ball being arranged by the American Legion. The affair, to be staged In the Oriental Gardens ballroom, has always drawn one of the largest crowds of the entire sea son and this year's event la expected to prove no exceptllon by those In ebarge. i Numerous cocktail and dinner par- i ties are being arranged to precede the dance Wednesday evening. Dancing i la to begin at 9 and continue until ! 3 a. m. ! A special feature of this year's ball la the Introduction of a "big time" floor ahow, which will present a number of well-known artists who have appeared In such famous night clubs as the Bal Tabarln and Royal Hawaiian In San Francisco, Sebai tlan's Cotton club In Los Angeles and various others. Included In the group of entertain ers are Don and Joan In the rumba and apache dance; Ruth Doner, hula. Oriental and torch dancer: Herman Whaley, well-known colored singer and dancer; Bud Graves, formerly of the Fanchon and Marco circuit: Neva Peoples, colored - blues singer and dancer; Dick -Duke -Dan, instru mental soloists, and the Ho ten a girls, late of the San Dtego exposition. Music for dancing will be provided by the "Streets of Paris" swing band which scored such a hit at the recent state Legion convention. Local dele gates were so Impressed with this orcheatra that special arrangements were made to 'present the musicians to Medfordltea for this ball. Gary Cooper Hit Returns On Bill . Rialto9 s Screen Starting today for a three day run the Rialto theatre offers to their pa trons a double bill that should be of special Interest. The first feature on the program la the return-by-popular-demand of Frank Capra's record breaking hit "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town," which closed its twenty-seventh week In Portland Thursday. The nation's crit ics are tumbling over one another to acclaim this story of Longfellow Deeds and his 20-mllllon dollar spend ing spree as the fastest, funniest en tertainment in years. The film not only broke all records In Portland hut Is holding long endurance records in other key cities as well. Oary Coop er and Jean Arthur co-star with George Bancroft, Lionel Stander (who goes to town as a comedian), Doug lass Dumbrllle and H. B. Warner in support. Feature number two on the pro gram Is Ursula Parrott's heart-touching story of a typical American fam ily, "There's Always Tomorrow." This picture Is being returned be cause of the fact that It introduced "Down The Stretch" with Mickey Rooney (left), Patricia Sills and Den nis Moore as the main principals, has been booked In as the feature attrac tion on the double bill program play ing at the Rialto theatre Wednesday and Thursday. The story is built around a boy who Is unable to get a lob as Jockey with any stable be cause his father, a former famous Jockey, had thrown a race, but Is finally taken in by a woman owner of a Kentucky racing stable. The heart aches the boy encounters in proving his worth go to make up what la aatd a very entertaining picture. Claire Trevor and Cesar Romero co-starring in "15 Maiden Lane" plays as the added feature on the two-ma jor-hits program, "15 Maiden Lane' is the story of a super crook and i charming -sleuth on the trail of i million dollar diamond in New York's famois diamond center. Others in the cast are Douglas Fowley, Lloyd Nol an and Robert McWade. On Roxy Bill 1 . Grace Moore, Americas beloved singing star, plays at the Roxy the atre today and tomorrow In the third ot her musical pictures, "The King Steps Out." Franchot Tono plays op posite Mias Moore as the king who left a throne to gallivant around the country on the arm of his kingdom's singing pest.
