Most eco nomic panaceas such as the Town send old age pension plan, the share the -wealth plan, the triple A and others fall because they do not dis tinguish between money and wealth, W. O. Jones, professor of economics at Willamette university, said In a forum discourse here. The Townsend plan, he said, falls to make the distinction for It would give eight percent of the population $34,000,000,000 a year to be converted immediately Into goods and services. But, he said, the greatest aggregate wealth this country has ever pro duced, $79,000,000,000, moans 30 per cent of the wealth would be In the hands of eight percent, requiring a so percent tax on all production. The share-the -wealth ptan falls to consider there la not ea much as (3,000 to $8,000 per person wealth In this country, but only $878 per per son, Professor Jones said. Of the triple A proposal, Jones said "It Is a marvelous plan for the farm ers; that of transferring money from the pockets of city folks to the pock- eta of country folks." Concluding, he said, "There la no substitute In economic organization under a democracy for in intelligent citizenship." other points urged by the speaker were elimination of war, control of the business cycle, and ut most development of productive ca pacities of the people.
