more.
Mra. Simpson, herself, holds only
s seven months' lease from Mrs. Cuth
bert Stewart, who Is the second lease
holder removed from the crown au
thorities. Today's Simpson news found a new
guessing game In full cr7.
Tea table dawdlers, among other
thine. r? trying to pick apart one
story that the king had given Mrs.
Simpson a 40,000 sterling (200,OO0)
pearl necklace.
Doubt Olft Gosulp.
Friends said they knew King Ed
ward had presented Mrs. Slmpsun
"many expensive gifts," but they es
timated the total value of the entire
lot probably waa closer to 20.000
pounds (1100,000) rather than twice
that much for a single plica.
At any rate, during the first part
of the week a smartly uniformed
messenger from a firm of society
Jewelers, holding a royal warrant, da
llvared an lntrlgulng-looking box to
the front door of "No. 18."
Meanwhile. It was learned the
British press will make Its first men
tion of the divorce case of "Simpson,
W., versus Simpson, B. A." In to
morrow's Issue of the magazine
"News-Review."
A six-line Item on page 38 will
read:
"Reporters were last week laying
their lines at Ipswich, Suffolk, In
readiness for tha divorce suit be
tween Mr. and Mra. Ernest Aldrlch
Simpson, expected to como up for
hearing next week before Mr. Justice
Kawke."
There waa absolutely no mention
of King Edward's friendship for the
American-born "Wellle."
Can Wed Commoner
However, on a page nearer to the
front of the magazine, News Review
wlU devote more than a column un
der tho sub-heading: "King and
Commoner" to exposition of the dis
covery that the king can marry a
woman not of princely lineage.
(Pointing out that "royal mar
riages contracted without consent
sre null and void," tha magazine,
after tracing the regulations which
govern msrrlage of membera of the
royal family, oomes to the conclusion
that the king's "own consent given
In council (not necessarily with the
permission of the council) la allht
Is required for his marriage outside
of royalty.")
The divorce Item will appoar In a
column adjacent to a departmental
ism! heading captioned "Advertising,"
outlining a campaign to boost world
salea of tea.
Despite the Item's reference to
"next week," Mr. Justice Hawke Is
expected by msny to hear the Simp'
son divorce case on Saturday of this
week. The leading hotel In Ipswich
hsa been booked full up for that
date.

SALEM. Oct. 32. Most eco
nomic panaceas such as the Town
send old age pension plan, the share
the -wealth plan, the triple A and
others fall because they do not dis
tinguish between money and wealth,
W. O. Jones, professor of economics
at Willamette university, said In a
forum discourse here.
The Townsend plan, he said, falls
to make the distinction for It would
give eight percent of the population
$34,000,000,000 a year to be converted
immediately Into goods and services.
But, he said, the greatest aggregate
wealth this country has ever pro
duced, $79,000,000,000, moans 30 per
cent of the wealth would be In the
hands of eight percent, requiring a
so percent tax on all production.
The share-the -wealth ptan falls to
consider there la not ea much as
(3,000 to $8,000 per person wealth In
this country, but only $878 per per
son, Professor Jones said.
Of the triple A proposal, Jones said
"It Is a marvelous plan for the farm
ers; that of transferring money from
the pockets of city folks to the pock-
eta of country folks."
Concluding, he said, "There la no
substitute In economic organization
under a democracy for in intelligent
citizenship." other points urged by
the speaker were elimination of war,
control of the business cycle, and ut
most development of productive ca
pacities of the people.

AS YALE ADVANCES
OF
KEW HAVEN, Conn. (UP) The
Tale wood collections now contain
more than 33,600 specimens, repre
sen ting 10,400 named species of 3,
488 genera and 328 families of the
result of a worldwide study of woods
by the Yale forestry school. The ad
ditions during th last two years alone
almost equal the total number of
specimens on hand a decade ago.
The most outstanding addition
made to the collections waa obtain
ed as a result of a visit by Prof. Sam
uel j. Record to Holland. This con
sisted of a gift to Yale by the Com
mercial Museum of the Colonial In
stltute at Amsterdam of 3.315 Java
nese wood specimens collected with
herbarium material by Koordere. This
material waa studied for more than
30 years by Dr. Janssonlus of Holland,
and the results of his work were pub
lished in six volumes, students at
Yale can examine the actual material
described In the text.
One of Record's major projects has
been the study of the timbers of Brit
ish Honduras. The work was begun
years ago In cooperation with the for
estry department of the colony and
with the Field Museum on Natural
History. Record collaborated In the
authorship of a volume on this sub
ject, published this year by the mu

has been found advantageous to use
specimens of little known, but po
tentially important tropical trees, as
the data thus obtained are contribu
tions to science.
