PA'GE EIGHT MEPFO"RP MAIL TRIBUNE, fEDFORD, OBECrOy, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER IT.'. 193 6. THE WORLD WITH A FENCE A New Ncvtt by Marian Sims SYNOPSIS: Carof ignnir, epent working In Blak Thornton't advertising agency, ha taught her two thing! On M that it it were not lor Blaks't older and selfish wile. ehe might become muoh in terested in her employer. The other is that ehe is becoming popular with Atlanta' "beat young peo ple' Even Porter Murray who hot been Atlanta' prise bachelor catch for a good many year. And Carol' company delightful. Porter it driv ing Cam home Irom a most expen sive dinner ; he no atopped in front of her apartment. Chapter M BRIDE8MAIO VOU wouldn't tell me we were out of gas?" Carol asked. "I would It I could get by with it." Porter put as arm around her and drew her towards him; put his tree hand under her chin. "I've been wanting to do this tor two months." Her first impulse was to refuse htrn. She hadn't kissed a man since Denis, almost a year ago. but she had wanted a great many times to ha kissed. Not by anyone she knew; merely an unfocused desire to feel a man's arms holding her, and a man's mouth on hers. i Ehe supposed every girl felt that, jbnt she resented the hunger never Itheless. Kisses were not significant any more she was modern enough to feel that but none of the men who bad attempted It had appealed eyes were grave again. "The break will do you good." Oh, stop ltl she wanted to scream Be a regular employer, so 1 can re member that that's all you are. Stop considering me being so damned human. No woman Is proof against that, week In and week out. ... She stood up quickly, and Blaks rose and stood looking at her with sober, searching eyes. "If you want to go a day earlier," he said carefully, "that will be Quite all right." "Oh, but 1 don't, thanks. . . ." She turned and lied to the Impersonal haven of her desk. SBE wrote Ellen that night, and managed to be convincingly en thusiastic. At her lunch hour the next day she went to the big store and sought out Mrs. House. Cor nelia, drifting by, spied her. "Hullo! What're yon looking for?" , She suppressed a smile. "A period dress In orchid taffeta," she said seriously. Cornells, stared at her. "For oaf a sake, whyr "Oh. 1 Just thought I'd like one. I need a new dress. . . ." Cornelia's face was a study. Sales manship fought a ludicrous battle with honesty. "Oh," she said blank ly, and Carol burst Into laughter. "Hullo," eald Cornelia, "what're you looking for?" lo bor. And so she had put them off with a casual laugh. But tonight the hunger was keener, and so she let him kiss her. When his lips touched hers she stiffened. "Not like that, please." "Sorry," he said huskily, and tried again. This time the kiss was light and slow snd expert. "Is that 'better?" ".Much," The hunger was satisfied for the momont, so sbe ssld quietly: ' Xot'i go home now." , He hesitated as If In protest, and then acquiesced. "Okay." He drove to the entrance and got out to open her door. "Is It too late for ma to come up for a while?" "I'm afraid It Is. Don't forget I'm one of the toilers of the world." "I won't. Well-goodnJght, I'll call you tomorrow or next day." Sbe said; "Please do," and left him. .JTAHLY In October there was an i- ecstatic letter from Ellen. She was to be married on the last Satur day in October, and she was count. Ing on Carol for maid of honor; sbe ihad selected Saturday because Csrol i would be better able to get away ifrom the office then. She put the letter aside and smiled ruefully. Ellen, bless her, was run nlng true to her own enviable type. Ellen would Insist upon and revel In every one of the traditional, faintly ludicrous gestures. And a pe riod dress, to be bought, of oourse. jfrom Carol's own salary! But she would have to go, unless Blake couldn't spare her; that was a ray of hope. She spoke to him about it the next morning, nil smiling ruefully. "If you think 1 oughtn't to take the time, 1 hope you'll say so. It won't break me up." He cbuckled and she knew he un derstoodall the things she hsdn't eald. "Of coui so you can talcs Ihe time; It won't mean but a day and a half from the office. If you want an out I'm willing to be Simon Leiree and put my toot down, but actually It's up to you." She wrinkled ber nose. "Oh, heck! 1 gums I'd belter go; 1 wouldn't hurt ber foellngs for Ihe world." "1 think you'd better go too." His "rm going to be maid of honor at Ellen Sauds's wedding," sbe ex. plained, "snd that's the presorlp tlon." Cornelia's eyes crinkled. "Yov ass! I thought you'd gone crazy." Mrs. House appeared with tb model In pink. It was a else four tees, and Carol slipped It on whlli Cornelia stood by with her eyes pro fesstonally narrowed. The dress wai bouffant, with a dropped shoulder and a tlght-attlng bodice. , Cornelia grinned. "Of course II looks like a bridesmaid, but It's sol so bsd as I expected. If It weren't tor that gosb-awful pink. . . ." Carol sighed. "Orchid wont be much better." She looked at Cornells and laughed. "What'U you buy It back tor, If I take good cars of It and don't spill a highball down the front?" "Not a cent," Cornelia said llrmly. "We wouldn't be lucky enough to sell that model more than once. 1 tell you what," she suggested; "You eould dye It black afterwards. That wouldn't be quite so bad. It makes you look real demure, and the men 'II love It. Sophistication's wasted on a man anyhow," she said crisply; "most of 'em would prefer this little pink number to the smoothest Im portatlon In the store." Carol scowled at her. "Fat lot of comfort you are!" She turned to the bewildered Mrs. House. "What's the tariff on this?" "Twenty-nine seventy-five." Mrs.' House made a valiant effort. "It's an excellent value, I think," sbe added earnestly. "Well It might bs worse. Take It off, and order me a fourteen In or chid damn It!" She looked at Cor nelia. "Had lunch yet?" "No. Hsve you?" "Not yet. I'm not very hungry after this, but 1 have to keep my stren'th up. Let's go upstairs and get a bite." Cornelia glanced at her watch "Okay. Let's." (Copirrlgt. ttSI, by Uarlan Sims) But Carol tlnde, tomorrow, she eannot escape Blake'a attention.
