Smith, executive assistant of the Rogue River national forest servloe, left today for Lake of the Woods where she Is to make an office audit. -She expected to be gone for the re mainder of the week. ( Train Late The Oregonlan. South . ern Pacific train due here from the north at 8:15 a. m., was approxi mately an hour and a half late this morning. Officials said the delay was caused by an unusually heavy vol time of traffic. Utilize Airport Arrivals at Med ford municipal airport yesterday in cluded Capt. C. R. Newton to Portland Sid Newton, well-known local resident and prom inent trapshooter of the local gun club, has accepted a position with the John Deere company and will move soon to Portland. He has lived here for the past ten years and la among the best-known marksmen In the state, Rosen baum Progresses A. 8. Ros enbaum. Southern Pacific district passenger agent convalescing from a broken hip In a San Francisco hos pital, states in recent letters to friends here that his progress In walk ing is rather slow. At present he la getting around on cratches but com plete recovery Is not expected for several weeks. West, navy recruiting officer here, motored to Yreka, Cal., this morning to trans act official business. Before leaving he said the naval office In Medford federal building would be closed from September 19 to 27, inclusive, while he is away in eastern Oregon on leave of absence. Clarke Resigns Samuel Clarke has resigned as recreation foreman of the Rogue River national forest, effective Peptember 15, it was announced to day by Karl L. Janouch, supervisor. Mr. Clarke is now on leave of ab sence. He took up his duties here on June 1, having been transferred from the Chelan national forest with headquarters In Okanogan, Wash. MT. Funeral services for Mrs. Vawtor were held at 3 o'clock Saturday after noon In Santa Barbara. Cremation followed the services, the ashes tto be sent to Portland to lie beside those of Mrs. Vawter's husband. Wil liam I. Vawter, who died tn llo. Mrs. Vawter Is survived by two sons. William of this city and Vernon of Santa Barbara: two grandsons; three brothers, Parmer Hill, news paper editor of Davenport, Wn.; George Hill of Arizona, retired mis sionary to Japan and China: and Dr. Clayburn Hill, president of the Pa cific Coast Theological seminary tn Berkeley. Calif., and his son, Cary Hill of Los Angeles and daughter. Mrs. Paul Vost. also of Los Angeles. Members of the family able to be present for the service were Dr. Hill. Mr. and Mrs. Tost, Cary Hill and William Vawter. Mrs, Vawter's sudden passing came as a distinct shock to scores of friends in southern Oregon where the Vawter family has been prominent for many years. Mrs. Vawter was born In Sil ver City, Idaho, but spent the greater part of her life in southern Oregon. The Vawter residence at 310 West Main street is among famous land marks of the city and is regarded by Medford residents as a familiar and Integral part of the community.
