PAGE THREE JUST A WEE SCOTCH LION WILL BE CHANGED E F irEDFCRD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEPFO'RD, OT?E(1Qy. THURSDAY. SEPTET PBF.R 3, 1936. ST. LOTJIS (UP) Mrs. Prink Good win, writer between 1692 and 1896 for the Cincinnati Tribune, still re members ' the trial of her early days as a pioneer sports writer In Cincin nati. In the days when she went to work there, a woman sports writer was un heard of, but she managed to get the Job and kept It until Ill-health forced her retirement. Talking to a young woman reporter of the St. Louis 8tar-Tlmes. Mrs. Goodwin told how she was literally ;drlven to take a Job. She said her k husband brought her and the young daughter west from New England, away from her family and friends. His Job as sporta editor was an ad vancement, but he worked at night and the young wife waa alone much of the time and knew no one. "I simply had to do something." Mrs. Goodwin explained, "so I be came a newspaper women. 1 dldnt seem to fit In anywhere. I liked ac tivity and people and excitement, but after all, I waa Just a woman, and you must remember that In those days, women were considered helpless, fluffy people." Mrs. Ooodwln and her daughter were accompanying her ' husband to the office for several weeks before eny mention was made of her work ing. The family had become well rnown around the newspaper plant before the owner, James M, Glenn, juggested that she might try special esslgnments. She did. but said she "Just natur a.ly gravitated toward sports." "Now, you know, there had never been a woman sports writer before," she said, "and at first everyone look ed down his nose at me. I could feel, and sometimes hear, them say, 'Here comes that silly woman 1' I Just sim ply made up my mind that they should learn to like me. "I assumed great Indifference to strong language, arnoklng, drinking, whatever the men did. And It wasn't long before they took cognizance of the fact that I was a good fellow who did a good Job and after that I be came great friends with the whole Mali and they treated me as an equal. "I was writing special features about all sports events, but I especlsl ly like horse racing and bicycling. "Bicycling was a great fad, and I never see young girls tiding today In shirts and shorts and I do not think of the uniforms we used to wear. At first the girls wore long skirts which were very cumbersome. "So a bicycling club was formed nd & new and modern uniform came Into existence. This consisted of blue pipaca, bloomers worn below the knee, ,verhung with an ankle-length skirt. After some discussion It was also de eded that the riders could dispose of the extra skirt once outside the city limits. "Not Ions alter that, a new and much Improved uniform came into fashion. It was very much like the modern culotte, a divided skirt that reached about two Inches below the calf. This was considered Indecorus, tut people became used to It, as they qo almost anything, even women wo men sports writers." She was asked If she wssn't critl eired by the public. "I don't know whether I wss criti cised or not, to tell you the truth." the sdmltted. "I was doing something 1 liked and there wss nothing wrong with It, and I knew that In a few years many women would be doing the same thing. I think there is a eefinlte field for women In sports writing as well as anything else. They just simply see things that men won't see." (Continued trom page One.) occupants of the plane were not able to see with equal clarity over the same distance and distinguish two American flags on the destroyer, one flag on an awning and the other at the masthead. Another puzzling aspect, which the admirals did not choose to clear up officially, was why the gunners on the Kane missed the plane If It was close enough for thorn to see It was a three-motored low-winged monoplane. Unofficially howver, they will give you the correct explanation of this one. It was not a question of marks manship but of diplomacy. They were afraid of wha- they would bring down. Establlsned, naval policy re quires that, In situations like this one. a shot Is first fired across the bow, and. If that fall to bring the assailant to his senses, a few rounds of blanks are fired. What most of the authorities here suspected in tho beginning -was that some aviator was Inspired by an over dose of sherry to declnre a personal" war on the United States and go gun ning for the destroyer. They con sidered also the possibility that the 1 lane was a government ship captured by the rebels. This mere guess was encouraged bj the supposition that it was the type ci plane which the Italians have been furnishing to the Spanish govern ment. The Germans generally favor the single of two-motored ship, while the French like tho biplane type. It is aparently true that nelthel the Spanish government nor the reb els have Indicated any bitterness about the presence of U. S. warships. Both have been coopeiatlng sincerely In evacuation arrangements. (UP) When tourists ar rive in Paris in 1937 to visit the ! French-International fine arts expo- sltlon they will see a new and beauti ful Champs-Ely sees. 1 The Avenue des Champs-Elyseea Is j to have three roadways Instead of j Its present one. This was announc ed by O. L. Vultton, vice-president j of the "Amis des Champs-Ely sees, ; who, also, is the father of the pro- ject. i While the transformation will en hance the avenue's beauty, Us pri mary scope is a utilitarian one. The two side roadways are being added to ease traffic considerably, espe cially during the exposition. The plan does not necessitate any reduction of the width of the exist ing roadway, as the space for the new ones will be taken from the wide 70-foot sidewalks, each of which will be divided into three sections. The sidewalk proper will be re- I duced to 40 feet. A 10-foot roadway will be cut alongside of the sidewalk for Idle traffic while a lane 10 feet wide will be on the outside border ing the main roadway. The present row of trees will re main untouched for they will be on the 10-foot section. However, a sec ond row will be added which will border the outside of the Inner walk In appearance, the Champs -El ysees will resemble the Avenue de la Orand Armee, which is a continuation of the "most beautiful avenue In the world," beginning at the other side of the Arch of Triumph and extend ing as far as the Bols de Boulogne Like it, it will have three lines for vehicular traffic and four spaces fot pedestrians. While the two slderoads primarily will, be for parked traffic, with the exception of parked taxlcabs which will continue to be stationed in tht middle of tho central roadway, those cars and taxis which will have to put down or take up passengers will use the slderoads. Vuitton's project was submitted some time ago and was accepted by the technical committee of the city of Paris with "slight modifications." The cost of alteration, which will be borne by the exposition. Is estimated at slightly more than 9200,000, Gun sights to tit &U guns. Sims Bros.. S3 N. Fir.
