The fact that we eat the vegetable we grow may dampen the enthualaam of aome and nuke It work Instead of pleasure. But, the real gardener never think of this. He knowa that there 1 as much beauty In orderly row of green and yellow vegetable aa In flower. Beauty In planta la a relative thing. All plant bloom when they come to maturity. Dahlia root are good to eat when properly cooked, but we nover grow them for that purpose, because ,ve have other root In the vegetable garden which we like bet ter. Why then should we ay that the brilliant green foliage of car rota, or the tender leaves of lettuce re not beautiful? Phlox Have Clear, vivid colors and easy culture make the modern annual phlox pop ular with all amateur gardeners. Thla brilliant flower, which comes In all colors of the rainbow except orange and the deep yellows, can be used for many purposes. It la excellent for bedding and will flash forth with a dawdling sheet of color. Varieties of iho compact typ" uisfcfi fins dwarfs for edging, and all of them can be used for making bouquets. The blues, reda and purplea are particularly vivid and there la a magnificent array of pink and rose shades with eyes, edgings and strips in some of the varieties. Their fol iage is subordinate, the whole plant seeming to blare with tiny blossoms supported by firm stems. It Is one of the easiest annuals to grow, and comes Into bloom very quickly. Almost any type of soil will do, but the richer It la the more vigorous the bloom and the longer the season. Sow In the open ground aa soon aa the soil Is warm and thin to alx Inches apart. It la better to sow and thin than to transplant, oa It does not stand transplanting a well as some of the other annuals. Modern meth ods of storngo and refrigeration have Improved the market vegetables Im measurably, but It still takes many hours or days to get them ready for the table, during which time they lose much of their sweetness and healthful qualities. On the other hand, the housewife can purchase only the standard and time-tried varieties on the market, whereas if she grows them herself, she has the choice of hundreds of types and varieties to fit In with her garden conditions and her fancy, and always havo the newest and the bent. although It can be handled In this manner If the root aystem Is not dis turbed.
