' PAflE RTX TlfEDFOTCn MAIL TRTBtTNTB, MEDFOKn, OftEON1, FRIDAY. MAKCH 13, 1936, Menace of Communism Stressed by Banwell The following address on communism wu delivered before the Uont club, March 11, by A. H. BanweU, manager of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce: (Continued from Thursday) While ooromunlst propaganda haa found It difficult to penetrate the army and navy of the United States, propaganda newspapera known aa the ISoldlera' Voloe," "Shipmates' Voice," and "Navy-yard Worker" have been circulated to membera of the two fa roe , miring a review of the fleet In June, 1934, leafleta were distribu ted to the aallora entitled, "The Fleet Arrives, Why This Great Naval enow?" Of oouree we know the average American la opposed to communism but we doubt very much If the aver age American knows the rapid strides that communism la making in this country. Perhaps we are all too busy to worry about such matters. This may be true, but nevertheless com' munlsm Is gaining and at the pres. ent time. Is, through the medium of lte various newspapers making some rather definite statements which vitally oonoern every American elti- Bsn. Here Is a statement quoted from the "Western Worker" of April 8 1934: "The Tory prosecution and American thugs and frame-up ma chlnery that support It are boasting too soon about the suppression of the communist party. Ths communist party will not be suppressed." Here Is another taken from "The Commu nist," page 118. February, 1938: "The communists and other aavancea workers must develop a wide strike movement, fighting on the basis of trade union democracy, for the lead ership of the struggle." Here Is one taken from the "Young Worker." March 38. 1938. It says, "Don't be fooled by sweet words, right against Roosevelt's war prep arations. Defend the Soviet Union." Here Is one from the "Water Front Worker," April 1st. 1938: "This Is America, where a few guMess, swab fsced, big bellied, capitalists and their henchmen have brought to the very brink of disaster, ruin, misery, and starvation for the laboring peo ple." A recent manifesto of the commu nist party stated, "The theory of the communists may be eummed up In a single sentence: The abolition of private property." The "Western Worker," of April 18, 1935, stated, "And so In the end, all the scattered blood of the working class martyrs spilled In these struggles will come together In a mighty flood to turn this whole world red." The "Young Worker," of April 9, 1936, msds the following statement. "The working clsss mother spea&s to her son as follows: My son, they will put a gun In your handa and teach you how to shoot. Learn your lesson well. When the time comes to use that gun, remember, you are the son of a worker, you belong to the working class. Use that gun, not against your fellow workers In for eign uniforms, but against the eX' plolters who have put It Into your hands. Uss It not to destroy ths youth of another country, but the ruling olass of your own." One thing I would like you to remember, with regard to these state ments la the fact that they were printed In the United States of America by oommunlstlc org Mil ra tion! here. Now here Is the question that Is facing us today and one which we cannot aa American ottlnens afford to neglect. What are you and I going to do to preserve and defend that herltafje whloh haa been given us through ths sacrifices, courage, and determination of those who went be fore ,ln faoe of all this oommunlstlo . propaganda that la being literally peddled to our Illiterate today? As I have said before the Ideals and principles upon which this na tion was built and has prospered are seriously threatened by those who would seek to overthrow our government and substitute In Its place a communistic form of govern ment. Can we alt Idly by and let those who encourage the fomenting of Industrial unrest, sabotage and the provoking of general strikes taks the leadership after all that has been sacrificed in years gone by to make this a land of the free for Americans? Citizens who have a love and re spect for their country citizens who have any spark of patriotism in their blood, should do everything possible to stamp out this curse which la In fact gaining ground this curse which Is a direct challenge to our American liberty. Communism Is not Just another topic for us to discuss In our dally wslks of life. It Is a real thing and the most vicious en emy which confronts America todsy. Bead some oommunlstlo literature and see for yourself If you not think we are Justified In asserting our patriotism to combat this foe of American society. May I remind you that this Is a Ood-fearlng Christian nation. Amer ica would never have been what It Is today had It not been for the recognition of Its dependenoe upon a Supreme Being. Communism Is athe ism and the future of our children at least should be sufficient reason that we conoern ourselves with a subversive activity that would take away from us that truat In Ood which we have always cherished and with out which we oould not long sur vive. You and I cannot afford to forget the sacrifices of the pioneers In years gone by who made this country what It la today. We cannot afford to for get the principles and Ideals which prompted our forefathers to fight for the cause of humany In order that Americans shall be guaranteed Indi vidual liberties and Independence. Therefore, you and I cannot afford to belittle those subversive activities which threaten that American liberty and would destroy everything which has been gained through the sacri fices of the past. We In this section are particularly favored wlth a wonderful pioneer background which to my way of thinking should be sn Inspiration to us, to fight sgalnst anything which Is un-American In principle. Qua Anderson, (he well known lecturer on Russia, when a visitor In Medford a few weeks ago, tend me that not one dune of Russian money was being spent In the United States to pro mote communism, although perhaps certain American organizations are known to be titillated with Russian societies. I oe. re not whether communism Is being financed In America or with Russian money. We should stamp It out and If, as Otis Anderson says, It Is only an American Idea then let's see that our government gets after the leaders In a real way. It would seem to me thst each of ua, aa Indi viduals, and In our several olubs and organlzatlona, such ss this Lions ! dub, should bend every effort to see that a curb Is plaoed on subversive activities snd that the lesders are i permanently muzzled, at least ss far aa talking In America Is concerned. I have been told that communism la rampant on ths campus In many of our oolleges and universities. I have never mentioned thla as a fact or even Insinuated It before today, but some time ago I was asked to address a certain school of higher learning In this state. At that time I Injected communism Into the talk. A few days afterward I received the following letter. I wild not mention the college because I feel that the perverted mind that penned this let ter was an exception to the rule and does not represent the type of stu dent which attends the Institution. Here Is what he said. I said "he" because, although the letter waa not signed, cowards never sign a letter. I had It traced In a quiet way, and It came from a person of masculine gender: "Dear Sir: "I was not among those who walked out during your address. but I heard plenty of comments from various student that your remarks were an Insult to their Intelligence, lour misrepresenta tions were so obvious to anyone Informed on the subject you were discussing, aa for Instance the In creased productivity of Russia un der the communistic regime. Your assumption that the Industrial chaos of this country Is produced by communistic propaganda Is too silly to be funny. Any student of average Intelligence knows that the economic mess we are In la due to three main causes (1) Me chanical displacement of hsnd labor, causing unemployment; (3) Private ownership of publlo utili ties, causing profiteering, graft, hoarding; (3) Commercial competi tion, causing scarcity of commodi ties, high prices, starvation of millions- snd war. You may be able to fool a lot of old fogies, but youth Is not so easily taken In. Besides, the more you talk the leas conviction your utterances carry so why be futile?" And that boy who Is so mix r.t juum may one of these days be teaching my children In some school. In closing I believe that commu nism In America Is something which should be given considerable atten tion by every business man. I am not an alarmist and am not afraid to speak my mind to anyone, but too many of us are really not giving this subject sufficient consideration, dubs like yours can do a great deal in stamping out thti menace and you can make your Influence so felt In Medford thst no such activity can make any headway here. And remem ber. It Is not only In time of war that Americans should be prepared to fight for their country, but In times of pea wo should maks our patriotism felt also. t High School News by STUDENT REPORTERS By Mlgnon Phlppe.
