PAOE NINE Tent Show Portrays American Progress 1936 CHEVROLETS CAPTIVATE AMERICA OF MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFOKD. OREGON. THURSDAY. FEBRUARY 6. 1936. iDoiCEnnii- ; : "'. '' "- - - , v Has Inherent Advantages of Hydraulic Plus Benefits of Chevrolet Company's Own Type Of Linkage Chevrolet. Introduces an entirely new braking Bytim in lis 1936 cars, utilizing the hydraulic principle of actuation In combination with Its own design of brake mechanism with in the brake drums at all four wheel. The system, Bays the company's an nouncement, possesses all the Inher ent advantages of hydraulic brake ac tion plus the special benefits that Chevrolet has built Into Its own type of ' articulated brake shoes and link 'age by which pedal pressure Is con verted Into braking effect. Except for the means of actuating the brake shoes, the new Chevrolet brake system Is the same as last year, though Improved In mechanical de tails and Increased In braking ca pacity. Easily Adjusted Ease of brake adjustment to com pensate for wear Is one of the fea tures of Chevrolet's exclusive braise design. There is only one adjusting point for each brake shoe, reached through an opening In the brake flange or the brake drum. With a screw driver used as a lever, a notch ed adjusting wheel Is turned until the shoe slightly drags on the drum, then the adjusting wheel Is backed off four notches, completing the op eration. Not even a feeler gauge to measure clearance Is required. In its design of the hydraulic sys tem, Chevrolet has made full use of Its inherent advantages, which In clude self -equalization of pressure on the brake shoes, freedom from frlc tlonal losses between pedal and shoes, proof against trouble caused by dirt or Ice, and ease of maintenance Achieve Sure Stopping By making the pistons in the wheel cylinders larger than the master piston operated by the pedal, thus multiplying the effect of foot pres sure, the Chevrolet design achieves sure stopping with light pedal pres sure. Further advantage Is taken of the hydraulic principle In that the front wheel cylinders are made larger than those of the rear wheels. As a result, for any given pedal pressure, the front wheel brakes exert a strong er braking effect than the rear a de sirable effect because, when brakes are applied, the weight of the ea shifts to Increase the load on the front wheels, while the weight on the rear wheels Is reduced. Chevrolat's distribution of braking effort compen sates for this shifting of weight, and by dividing the total braking effort between front and rear wheels in pro portion to their load and traction, provides against the locking of only one pair of wheels. The Chevrolet design of articulated brake shoe and links prevents the uneven wearing of brake linings by Insuring full contact of the entire lining with the drum, distributing the pressure and the wear over the entire area of the linings. The Chevrolet brake system differs from others also In that the hand brake lever actuates both brake shoes In each rear wheel drum. The hand lever and the actuating levers Inside the drums provide for greater travel of the shoes than does the service brake pedal.
