When questions asking why the snow turned blue with every depres sion at Union Creek kept pouring In to his office, Karl L. Janouch, forest supervisor, decided Saturday to in vestigate. He had planned to go to Union Creek himself yesterday but was detained here and Mr. Obye went In his stead. "The enow seems blue wherever there la an indentation, all right." said Mr. Obye today, "but that la nothing new. It happens In a, great many localities. It to probably due to a reflection from surroundings." Mr. Janouch agreed with Charles plon, meteorologist at the local weather bureau, who said It was a question of light and shadow. Many persons visited at Union Creek during the day but not many tarried for skiing as the snow was frozen too hard for good sport, Mr. Obye said. Children, however, had a good time coasting. Union Creek's blue anow aroused considerable curiosity and many vis itors tt Crater lake national park yesterday were observed making de pressions In the anow to see whether thoy could produce a blue color. Ryan, assistant su perior, reported the rescue of the treasured communication of Pope Plus IX to the Couer dAlene In dians In 1871. reputed to be the only papal brief ever addressed to an In dian tribe. Pernoll, Applegate postmaster and atorekeeper, three weeks ago. Tho total amount of the reward Is now aaoo. Pernoll, who waa shot In the leg and arm, and beaten over the head by the thug, is now able to be up. When accosted by the highwayman, on the way from his store- to his home, Pernoll fled and was wounded. He was able to give but a meagve and general description of his assailant. Cryder told him he had better ad mit slaying Mildred because a mob "was going to lynch me. 4 3 Of Boat Crew Killed By Blast SAN DIEGO, Calif., Feb. 3. (AP) An explosion sank the 65-foot tuna clipper, Olimpla, off Cape San Lucoa at the southern tip of Lower Califor nia, killing three of her crew of eight. Romancla, another purse-seiner of the San Diego fishing fleet, rescued the five survivors from the water last night, radio report stated. A search was conducted today for the bodies of the others. SALEM, eb. 3. (AP) A half dozen cases of scarlet fever were reported at the State School for the Deaf, but all were Isolated and efforts made to curtail spread of the disease, Rufus C. The attendance was made up large ly of Rogue Snowmen who spent the day in skiing. The slides and hill sides were fast and conditions in gen eral were better for skiing than at any other time this season, club mem bers declared today. The west highway from Diamond lake Junction to the park entrance, which had been closed for several weeks, was open for one-way traffic, with turnouts provided every 600 feet and a guide at each end to direct the movements of autoe. The state rotary plow was working this morning to open the road for two-way traffic, park headquarters here were notified. Two Inches of snow fell in the park during last night and a light.
