WASHINGTON, Feb. 8. (AP) The
quaint llsherfollt of Tangier Island,
cut oil from the rest of the world In
the Ice-locked lower reaches of Ches
apeake bay, had a supply of food to
day to help them face one of the
worst winters they can remember.
Dirigible and plane yesterday drop
ped 1.BOO pounds of food for the 1.600
natives and staved off threatened dis
tress. The general health of the rugged
lslandera, said to be descended from
14 families of Cornish fishermen, was
reported good.
A Goodyear company dirigible, u"
oted by Karl Lange, landed on the Ice
near shore yesterday and unloaded
1,000 pounds of provisions. An air
plane from Easton, Md., piloted by
Fotrest Wenyon, brought 800 pounds
more.

north, central, and south parts of the
state, with probable headquarters at
Yreka, Truckee and San Bernardino.

blue snow today 'was Jiutt what It al
ways has been to him: a beautiful
mylth.
When questions asking why the
snow turned blue with every depres
sion at Union Creek kept pouring In
to his office, Karl L. Janouch, forest
supervisor, decided Saturday to in
vestigate. He had planned to go to
Union Creek himself yesterday but
was detained here and Mr. Obye went
In his stead.
"The enow seems blue wherever
there la an indentation, all right."
said Mr. Obye today, "but that la
nothing new. It happens In a, great
many localities. It to probably due to
a reflection from surroundings."
Mr. Janouch agreed with Charles
plon, meteorologist at the local
weather bureau, who said It was a
question of light and shadow.
Many persons visited at Union
Creek during the day but not many
tarried for skiing as the snow was
frozen too hard for good sport, Mr.
Obye said. Children, however, had a
good time coasting.
Union Creek's blue anow aroused
considerable curiosity and many vis
itors tt Crater lake national park
yesterday were observed making de
pressions In the anow to see whether
thoy could produce a blue color. Re
port said they not very sucewful
unless the depression was deep enough
to provide shadowy walls.

RFC to sld In establishing the bank
pursuant to a plan of reorganization

which did not resume business after
the 1933 bank holiday.
The Maine Bupreme court and a
three-Judge federal district court In
western Kentucky have held stateH

A new, high record for January
business was established during the
past month by the J. C. Penney com
pany's Medford store, according to a
statement today by W. S. Bolger.
manager here. Both In number of
transactions and financial volume of
business, a new high was scored by
the Medford store indicative of the
Improvement of business In this sec
tion of the state.
"We are gratified in the splendid
sates ahowlng of our store during the
paat month," Mr. Bolger said. "We
feel that 1S36 wll be a good business
year In this city and trade area and
our January sales bear out our opti
mistic prediction. Last month's sales
record may be attributed. In a meas
ure, to the fact that advance buying
enablea us to open the year with
complete stocks, enabling us to fill
all needs of our patrons Immediate
ly."
This policy of buying well In ad
vance of each season to assure com
plete stocks at all times will be main
talued throughout the year, Mr. Bol
ger said.

few treasured manuscripts and rec
ords were all that remained today
of the historic 65-year-old Father's
house and Its contents at he Sacred
Heart mission here. The old mission
waa a mass of charred ruins.
Father W. J. Ryan, assistant su
perior, reported the rescue of the
treasured communication of Pope
Plus IX to the Couer dAlene In
dians In 1871. reputed to be the only
papal brief ever addressed to an In
dian tribe. The history of the house
and the records of the mission from
Its founding by Father Demet In
1843 also were saved from the flames
which consumed the three-story
building within an hour Thursday

Delroy Getchell, has offered a reward
of S100 to be added to tha same
amount offered by Jackson County
for evidence leading to the arrest and
conviction of the bandit who shot
and beat John W. Pernoll, Applegate
postmaster and atorekeeper, three
weeks ago. Tho total amount of the
reward Is now aaoo.
Pernoll, who waa shot In the leg
and arm, and beaten over the head
by the thug, is now able to be up.
When accosted by the highwayman,
on the way from his store- to his
home, Pernoll fled and was wounded.
He was able to give but a meagve and
general description of his assailant.
The state police and sheriffs office
have Investigated a half hundred
clues and "tips," but no direct evi
dence haa been uncovered.

day from Injuria sustained when
hit by a car driven by Harold Dutro.

Douglas Van Vlack. on trial for tne
murder of his former wife, Mildred
Hook, testified today he was threat
ened with lynching In order to obtain
his confession of the killing.
He quoted Deputy Sheriff Oris Cry-
der as saying: "We're going to lynch
you all right but we'd like to do it
legally If we can.
Cryder told him he had better ad
mit slaying Mildred because a mob
"was going to lynch me.

Killed By Blast
SAN DIEGO, Calif., Feb. 3. (AP)
An explosion sank the 65-foot tuna
clipper, Olimpla, off Cape San Lucoa
at the southern tip of Lower Califor
nia, killing three of her crew of
eight.
Romancla, another purse-seiner of
the San Diego fishing fleet, rescued
the five survivors from the water last
night, radio report stated. A search
was conducted today for the bodies
of the others.
SALEM, eb. 3. (AP) A half dozen
cases of scarlet fever were reported at
the State School for the Deaf, but all
were Isolated and efforts made to
curtail spread of the disease, Rufus
C. Holman, state treasurer, an
nounced today. None of the oases
were reported in serious condition.

DAY OF SNOW SPORTS
AT CRATER LAKE PARK
Seventy -six cars and 329 persons
registered at Crater lake national park
yesterday, headquarters here an
nounced today.
The attendance was made up large
ly of Rogue Snowmen who spent the
day in skiing. The slides and hill
sides were fast and conditions in gen
eral were better for skiing than at any
other time this season, club mem
bers declared today.
The west highway from Diamond
lake Junction to the park entrance,
which had been closed for several
weeks, was open for one-way traffic,
with turnouts provided every 600 feet
and a guide at each end to direct the
movements of autoe. The state rotary
plow was working this morning to
open the road for two-way traffic,
park headquarters here were notified.
Two Inches of snow fell in the park
during last night and a light. Inter
mittent fall waa continuing this
morning.
The park service Is preparing to
take care of 300 cars next week-end i
when It la expected the Rogue Snow
men, the Sky Liners of Bend end the
Snow Clan of Klamath Falls will unite I

men answering an alarm at the V. J.
Perterson estate knew there waa sup
posed to be a fire hydrant there
abouts. They searched for 20 minutes
and finally found it burrled under a
snow drift. In the meanwhile the
fire destroyed a creamery and cattle
barn with damage of $25,000.
