TO DIESEL MOTOR Father of Self-Starter En ables General Motors Start Diesel Building for Nation's Railroads Ninety-four per cent of the VIM tors to Yosemlte national park tn Diesel 1935 traveled by automobile. By LESLIE AVERY United Press Staff Correspondent DETROIT, Jan. 10. ( UP ) Genius of Charles F. (Boss) Kettering, whose name 1 synonymous with the self starter and half doaen other major development In evolution of the automobile, haa established General Motors corporation In another multi million dollar 'business that of building Diesel motors for the na tion's railroads. Kettering's conversion of a four cycle, oil burning motor Into a two- cycle engine capable of generating energy to propel- the newly popu lar, light streamline trains was the factor which launched GMC'a electro-motive corporation. A huge plant for building this type of locomo tive now Is under construction at McCook, III. Does Impossible. Termed as Impossible In compara tively recent engineering books and muttered In the same breath with perpetual motion, the two-cycle mo tor was perfected by Kettering on his own yacht In the waters of Lake Michigan. The two-cycle operation of any motor differs from the four-cycle type now In general use In all mod ern automobiles tn that power la generated by two strokes of 'each piston. Instead of four. In the con ventional four-cycle engine the fuel explodes, the piston travels down, transmitting power to the crank shaft. Then an upward stroke la required to clear the explosion chamber of exhaust gases. Fuel is sucked Into the cylinder by another down stroke and compressed on the upstroke, ready for firing again. Kettering's Diesel does all of this in one downward and one upward movement, cutting tn half the wear on piston and cylinders. , Boon to Railroads. The depression ridden railroads, knowing only too well that two thirds of a steam locomotive's life spent in the roundhouse and one-third op the road. Immediately grasped at this new source of power In an effort to gain back some of the business lost to motor bus and airplane. Theoretically, the Diesel, requir ing only a cursory, periodic Inspec tion, will do the work of three steam locomotives in addition to eliminat ing costly coal and water stops. At first, however, the 9 00-horse power unit was not adaptable to heavy duty usage. Its field was con fined to the light streamline units until development of a heavy duty type for the Santa Fe. It appears to be two highly streamlined bag gage cars, but In them are four Diesel driving generators that pro duce the energy to turn the elec tric motor which actually propel the train. Build 150 Yearly. The new factory at McCook will have an ultimate production of 100 "electro motives" yearly, according to present plans. Cost of each unit will run between 9300,000 and $400, 000. The two-cycle Innovation still has not made the Diesel motor prac ticable for use In the automobile. It Is said that Kettering has been unable to adapt the two-cycle fea ture successfully to a motor of less than 600 horsepower. But all the motor manufacturers are experi menting with Diesel motors, and It would not be surprising to find Kettering the pioneer once again. Few persons who drive an auto mobile realize the contribution Ket tering has made to their comfort and safety. Born on a farm In Ash land county, Ohio. 1B7, Kettering overcame many obstacles In his rise to one of the world's foremost automotive engineers. Working his way through all educational Insti tutions In the neighborhood, Ket tering graduated from Ohio State in 1004, and after a try at school' teaching, telephones and cash regis ters, organized the Dayton Engineer ing Laboratories company in 1911, which was called Delco. Self-Starter Sale Hard. Peddling his self-starter was dif ficult. He first had to convince stor age battery manufacturers that a powerful enough battery could be ; built to turn the gadget. Selling the motor manufacturers was even harder. Finally a friend of Henry M, Lei and, founder of Cadillac, broke his wrist while tying to crank his machine, and Leland gave Ketter ing his chance. In 1912 the Delco starter was adopted as standard equipment on all Cadillac cars. After merging his company with General Motors In 1918, this unit was In corporated aa GMC Research Lab oratories with Kettering at the head. In these laboratories were born the anti-knock fluid for motor fuel, lacquer finish for automobile bodies and Innumerable oyier refinements which the rnotcrlng public accept without a thought of the months and years that went Into their per fection.
