NEVIR MIND THi LADY - NfVIR NEVER NEVER MIND THI IAOY NEVER MIND THI UOY NEVER MIND THE UOY by CHAPTER ONE TERRY WILLETT NYTHING could happen in Propionoire that smelly port with the incense of rotting copra and stagnant dirty sea foam pervading its narrow streets and low, flat topped houses. It was the birthplace of trouble, the refuge pf gun-runners, the feeding ground of sedition. And withal it was important enough to cause any government pro tern to squirm anxiously and foreign powers to develop headaches when trade concessions were guaranteed. The answer Coffee! The Great God Coffee! You could see the great ware houses on the docks crowded with tiers and tiers of coffee sacks: ships loading a hundred bags a minute, big fat hun- drcd-and-thirty-pound bags the batches, cascading off rattaa3 mailings to slide down In the hold. Gangs of stubby, dirty natives run ning bach and forth to chutes with bags on their backs, unloading from great caravan. of wagons that waited In a never-ending line to dis gorge. Propionoire coffee the one great source of revenue to a government that swayed on a treacherous finan cial keel. And what a weapon that was to Propionoire an added Ittng to a town that was already the scor pion of South America. Hundreds ot darkslilnncd runty men In khaki uniforms and sun caps patrolling the streets, dirty little men with a queer silky stubble on their Jaws, arrogant little rata who didn't give a damn for the power ot any consulate on earth. Sea cap tains uneasily watching their men go ashore in Propionoire trouble In the air. The town was scourged with dis ease and ralniall. Take a look at the consular visas on ships' papers "Port diseases dysentery, fever" Kalntall twenty-eight Inches a year. Italse a row In Propionoire with those offlcloua soldler-pollc. Many a Unto a ship sailed short-handed days later the body of a seaman floated out to sea through one of the aowage canals that formed network under the port. A little lata for his ship, but on his way. Days of sodden rain and days of blinding heat In a place where any thing could happen. And into the office of tha National Coffee Company of a muggy and sweltering day came a tall young man, unshavon of jaw, khaki breeches and cracked puttees garb ing his long legs, a fairly white shirt open at his tannod throat, and a pith helmet pushed back on his bead. Terry Wlllott In a hurry. The clerk In the office raised bis head indolently at the sound ot quick approaching footsteps. Terry didn't like native clerks, a terrible bread whose clerical Jobs made them kings with their fellows and Impudent with the whites. This one had no chance to be re gal. It was just as well. He'd have had his face pushed In. Terry paid him no heed, foregoing all preliminary formalities to knock briefly at the door of the manager's private office and enter Immediately on the beels ot his knock. The clerk shrugged his shoulders. These crazy Ingleses. And It waa so Infernally hot. "Hello, Drake," Terry greeted tho manager shortly, and dropped bis weatherboatsn belmet on the desk, THEi Englishman looked un. aoms- 1 what annoyed at first with this peremptory entrance. In the tropics a man clings to the little things of formality even though he may let morals, self-respect r- even life I: I'll. Drake had )en out here long enough to assimilate that time-worn truth. England waa but a oems to him now except that he nevr forgot he was an Englishman. Dot Terry wouldn't hsve cared If he were the Prince of Wales. "I've got to get to the caplial fast. h rlnped out. "or wherever this fool government was seen last. That ad ditlonai equipment Is a month over- dui and If we wait much longer the whole camp will be down with fever. We've had sickness and desertion already." Drake shrugged. He hsd regarded the National Coffee Company's pro) ect as lll ndvlsed from the atari, even though the government supported It. The undersigned has been by the County Court of Jackson County, Oreicon, appointed exeoutrlx of the catate of Sidney Sumpter Smith, MIND THC UOY HiVIR MIND THE LADY NEVER MIND THE LADY MIND THE LADY David Garth going "bumpety-bump" into my yellow Palva so that coffee ship ments could be floated down from Santa Ellsa waa a fond, foolish dream. No sensible engineer would havo tackled the job, he reflected. Not In that fever-ridden district with an Inefficient and procrastinating government holding the purse strings. No, only a couple ot grlm-llpped Americans who, by some miracle, had bullied, cajoled, fought, and driven sulky natives and the flighty Coffee Company to the point where they had almost succeeded In per forming tha Impossible. "I've cabled" he began. "Damn your cables!" swore the tall young man. "Do you think I've come down that stinking river to play hopscotch with cable blanksT Listen, Drake, things are getting bad. Fover is breaking out, I tell you. Feverl Do you know what that means? "It means we have to act faster than breathing. Those Chalkls will quit like rats only Dad Is holding them there now and he's had a touch himself. Right now he's sanitary, mechanical and construction engi neer, foreman, doctor, priest, and fighter, and It he's ever knocked off his feet, good-bye to everything.' He pushed the heavy auburn balr back from his brow with a quick rest less motion of his hand: his eyes were blight. Drake reflected that maybe this young man had a touch ot the dreaded jungle fever himself. "You look rather worn, Willett, be laid sympathetically. "Take easy for a couple of days. Believe me!" he exclaimed fervently. know how you teell This govern ment has nearly driven me dotty at times, by Jove, but you can't hurry It, old chap. You've done wonders, your father and you, but a South American gov ernment Is sometimes the nearest thing to an old ladles' sewing circle that exists." Sure, Drake," Terry said Impa tiently, "I know that. But this different. You know bow Dad Is he's sunk his teeth Into this job like a bulldog. We can't just sit around up there twiddling our thumbs and slugging whiskey to fight oft the fever. Dad's worked like ten men It's getting him. I tell you, Drake, that requisition has to go through." "I'll cable again," Drake said tone lessly. Cables! He knew that cables were the same as talking to a deaf old man without his ear trumpet. Ills fingers drummed thoughtfully on the edge ot the desk. TERRY laughed mirthlessly and lit a clgarcu "Sure," be advised, blowing out the match with a quick eilialatlon of blue smoke. "Cable by all means, but I'm heading for the capital. I don't trust your shipping agents there. Boat In two days, bub?" "Luckily, yes," Drake nodded. "Dutch boat. Freighter, but I Imag ine you can get passage. Willett," he leaned forward suddenly, "take my tip and duck this job, Uet your father and clear out of Propionoire, There's revolution In tb air. "This Is going to be no lit place tor any white man. and If martial law Is declared, you'll be hemmed In here tor months I'm ducking It the first sign of trouble. Why, If as yon tell me fever hits the river. It'll be hell. Revolution and tever, Willett. A white man can't buck thorn." "That's Just too bad," Terry said briefly. "But I'm going to the capl tal and what's more, I'll be back, Revolution won't stop me or fever either. Dad's the boss. He says the Job goes through and, aa far as I'm sometimes known as S. Sumpter Smith, as Sumpter S. Smith, and aa S S Smith, deceived, and has quail fled. The creditors of and alt persona having cUUms against said deceased, are hereby notified to present th same, verified as required by law, within six months after the first publication hereof, to the under Uned, at the otlfre of her attorney, Glenn O Taylor, Federal Bldg., Med ford. Executrix of Said Estate NEVER MIND THE LADY NEVER MIND THE LADY NEVER MIND THE LADY 'WrW,',i concerned, the joh goes through."! Drake realized It wasn't any use.j Terry knew as well as he did that for months the cone country nau jusi beon waiting a spark to rise up in arms and that meant the stopping ot coastwise trade and the blockading1 of the ports.
