Benjamin Dunlap Dag well, rector of St. John's Cathedral at Denver, Colo., had been named bishop of the Episcopal diocese of Oregon to day as a result of final ballotttng held by the house of delegates here last night. Dean Dag ell was elected on the 34th ballot, after having been well up toward the top throughout the voting which lasted all day. Hl consecration awaits formal ap proval of the presiding bishop, all the bishops In the United states and members of the standing committees of each diocese. Dean Dagwell was chosen to suc ceed the late Walter Taylor Sumner, bishop of Oregon for more than 30 years, who died as a result of a heart attack Sept. 4 of this year. The Denver rector received 33'j votes of the 43 cast on the 34th bal lot. The Right Rev. William P. Rem ington of Pendleton. Ore., was second: the Rev. Perry Smith of Roseburg, Ore., third, and Dean Horace Ramsey of Portland fourth. Dean Dagwell has been dean and director of the Denver pastorate since !V34.. Prior to that time he was In Charge of the church at Pueblo. Colo. He was born In Susquehanna, Pa., In 1890. and was graduated from the Scabury Divinity School of Faribault. Minn., in 1916. The honorary degree of doctor of divinity was conferred upon him by that Institution in 1932. The house of delegates In session yesterday paid tribute - to the late Blshlp Sumner by passing a resolu tion expressing profound sorrow at bis death. Dean Dagwell is -unmarried. The Community Chest campaign headquarters at the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce building will remain open until next Wednesday, October 16th for the convenience of lata contributors to the Commu nity Chest fund, according to an announcement today by M. N. Hogan. general chairman of the 1936 chest drive. A staff of publlo spirited vol unteer solicitors have contributed generously of time and effort so that the citizens of Medford and surrounding area might be con tacted.
