ButlShet ' Smart yes, from his own standpoint, from the standpoint of getting things and keeping them,' and giving nothing away, But is he smart in a larger and more realistic sense! Of course he isn't from the standpoint of what really makes life worth while. He misses the happiness that lies in helping others, and he also misses the respect, affection, the high regard of his neighbors and his fellow men. He thinks he can beat the game by paying his bills promptly and minding his own busi ness. Put he can't. Sooner or Inter he is pegged in his com munity where he belongs. So he misses something that is worth more than the property he has accumulated, and something that no amount of money can buy. Hut he can't see it. Therefore it is not that phase of the matter, we attend to discuss. More over all that sort of thing Mr. X would dismiss, as a lot of hocus poeus, and sentimental nonsense anyway. Putrefac tion gives rise to various poisonous products which, this radiologist In. auu, are absorbed Into tha blood and impair the natural resistance of the entire system, or words to that effect. Radiologist Jordan's view Is op posed by Biochemist Sydney W. Cole of University of Cambridge, who points out that cane sugar Is not di gestible by salivary enzymes, and hence nothing would be gained by prolonged mastication of thta food. X-ray studies have shown, too, that sugar passes through the stomach quickly. Physiologists know that cane sugar Is rapidly converted Into dext rose or glucose In which form It Is utilized In the body. The amount of sugar (glucose) In the blood rices measurably, within 10 minutes after one has swallowed an ounce of cane sugar, and ell of the sugar Is absorbed within 2 hours, even If four ounces ""pHAT answer is easy. Sugar or other soluble carbohydrate which reaches the Intestine fa converted Into lactic and other acids which naturally In hibit or. oppose the growth and mul tiplication of harmful germs. .he only germs which can produce toxins. Various investigators have shown that cane sugar, contrary to the older fancies, is not a foctor of dental carles. But somehow these dear old superstitions persist long after the progress of learning has proved them untenable. Biochemist Cole, by the sray, tells his. students at Cambridge that cane sugar by mouth Is at least equal and probably superior to the comparative ly expensive dextrose. I ' think a lot of gullible doctors In this country could profit or their trusting pa tients could by a vliit to Cambridge. Especially our hoity-toity child spe cialists who prescribe anything -and everything only so It Is not pie bean sugar. All young people who play, exercise or work strenuously as young people shouJd, may well use an ample amount of sugar In their dally diet. It is well digested and absorbed and It wards off exhaustion of the general muscles and the heart muscle. But mature adults who do not play or work hard sugar for them is not so good.
