PAGE SIX MEDFORT) MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFOKD. OREGON, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1935. FIGURES OH 1935 ARE MADE PUBLIC WASHINGTON, D. O.. Sept. 30. An all-time outpouring of 37,000,000 people vacationing a-wheel and a record breaking expenditure of $4, 000,000,000 was the picture of the na tional travel and vacatolnlng scene for 1035, advanced In a preliminary aurvey made public by the American Automobile Association today. "Back of these gigantic figures was an unprecedented travel urge and an expansion of travel horizons both at home and abroad," the A. A. A. de clared. The national motoring body's itatemcnt follows: "From every section of the country and from every enterprise catering to the tourist trade have come reports od Increased volume and larger per capita expenditures. "All preliminary estimates as to the volume of truffle during the 1035 travel season have had to be revised upward. There has been an Increase of a proximately 15 per cent In the number of highway vacation tours over the large volume of last year. Indicating that nenrly 11,000,000 cars carrying Borne 37,000,000 persons will have made extended .trips when the record of this year's travel season Is finally compiled. "Affiliated motor clubs throughout the country unanimously report ex pansion in the number of requests for routing and touring Information, the rates of gain ranging all the way from D to 75 per cent with the aver age uicreaso being about 15 or 10 per cent. Over 3,000,000 people visited the national parks, an Increase of 15 per cent over 1034; white preliminary estimates Indicate a gain of between 16 and 30 per cent in the number of visitors to the national forests. "Further evidence of greater use of the automobile Is conttned In gasoline consumption figures, the trnde fore casters placing the total year's de mand nt the highest level on record. "Much of the vacation botind travel moved In a northerly direction during the summer months. New England reported a 30 per cent Increase In tourist business while the Parlflo northwest with a newly completed system of excellent highways and with an extensive cnmpalgn to at tract tourists enjoyed unprecedented natronuge. The vacation areas nar- tieulnrly the mountain sections of New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia nnd the lake regions of Michigan, Minnesota and Wlneonsln received their full share of the In creased tourist business. "Travel over the Canadian border also was unusually heavy with a large number of cars being routed to Mon treal and Quebec while a great many chose the maritime provinces and the Jntfrostlng and scenic Gsspe penin sula as their objective. Motor vaca tioning abroad reached almost phe nomenal proportions, being, more than half again as largo as last year and moro and more Americans took advantage of the newly reduced ocean rates on cor transportation and of the freedom with which motorists may drive across International bcnin dnrles. "The mammoth public works nro- Jocs dotting the country were a new met or In this yeor's tavel picture and attracted thousands of motorists. wnne mountain, lake and seashore re. sorts experienced one of the best tourist years In history. The San Diego fair In California also has been an outstanding tourist maenet. and there was a noticeable gain in trans continental touring. lbor day this -your brought much less slackening in uic travel iKte, indicating a larger volume of fall travel, winter touring also Is expected to reach new high li Villi Ihf rcRiuu that Florida and the great southwest can expect ... MuuauNiiy mrge iniiux of visitors. "Although the Pan-American high way into Mexico city was officially opened Isst spring, roart cnodltlons hsvs not permitted extensive use; but the last bad stretch Is scheduled for 1 completion early In October, and a large amount of winter travel U an- I tlclpated for this International route. I "It can readily be seen, therefore, l that practically every section of the country benefited from motor tour ing and from tourist expenditures. That motor vacationing Is assuming an Increasingly Important position In the nation's economic life la Imme- i dlately apparent when It is realized that expenditures oy motor tourists this yesr were only slightly below the federal government's works relief ap propriation. These expenditures ca not fall to have a definitely stimulat ing effect on the business of the country from now on until Christmas. "No other type of expenditure flows more quickly through the channels of oommerce and trade than does the tourist dollar. Of the total spent this year, at least $800,000,000 went to ward transportation costs, such as gasoline, garaging, repairs and so on. Apprlxlmately the same amount was spent for hotel accommodations; about 1,000,000,000 went to retail stores for Incidental purchases: C830, 000,000 was spent for food; $335,000, 000 for theaters and other forms of amusement and $345,000,000 at con fectioneries and refreshment stands. "Since more and more communi ties have come to realize the value of the tourist dollar, there has been a great Increase in the competition for motorists' patronage. In general, mo tor travel this year followed the usual trend; that Is, toward those areas that have favorable conditions such as climate, scenic and historic at tractions, opportunities for recreation, good roads, good accommodations, ser vice facilities; but those communities that make a special bulsness of sell ing themselves have the bulge on their competitors. A notable Instance Is the Increasing patronage of the various provinces of Canada." FEES DISAPPEAR Nash, LaFayette Sales This Year On the Up Trend Shipments of Nash and Lafayette cars during the first seven months of thin year were greater than the total shipments made by the Nash Motors Company In 1034, according to C. H. Bliss, vice-president and director of SACRAMENTO. Cel., Sept. 38. (UP) Three state agencies tonight pressed an investigation Into the mysterious disappearance of 153 one hundred dollar checks sent to the state board of equalization by appli cants for liquor and beverage manu facturers licenses. Disappearance of the checks, pre sumably while they were enroute from board offices to the controller's office, was discovered several months ago, but was not revealed until to day. State Finance Director Arlln E. Stockburger said the finance de partment, the board of equalization and the controller's office are In vestigating. Ninety-three of the liquor manu facturers questioned thus far said the original checks have not been cashed, and agreed to Issue dupli cates, officials said. sales for the company. Sales at present, aided by the In troduction of the new 1936 Nash "400" and 1923 LaFayette, are dis tinctly on the uptrend, according to Walter W. Abbey, local Nash and La Fayette dealer. "Reports from our own distribut ing organization as well as retail sur veys show that the prospect for fall business Is better this year than It has been in the last five yeays." said Mr. Bliss. "In the agricultural sec tions good crops promise a healthy improvement In all lines of retail merchandising," he continued. Mr. Bliss pointed out that In the east and In most of the larger cities throughout the country department store sales and factory payrolls, both Important barometers of general busi ness conditions, Indicate that the fall volume of buying will exceed the rec ord of the last several years. "We are looking forward." he ex plained, "to an unusual fall volume in both our Nash and LaFayette lines." Peeks Revocation. PORTLAND, Sept. 28.
