During the summer vacation w cm, activities around the Town club, as well as with all other social or ganizations, were few, as members and friends enjoyed vacations and trips out of town. Several nearby re sorts have proved exceedingly poou lsr with townsneoole, especially Dia mond lake and Lake o' the Woods. A number of those active In local social circles have summer homes of thHr own on Rogue rlvtr and other valley beauty spots. While many have preferred local reports, where they are able to be close to attend to necessary busl bum, others have spent the summer traveling more or less distantly. . However, despite the beautiful weather sttll lingering In the valley, summer for most Is definitely over, and organisations and private cir cles are showing Increased activity, beginning the heightened social tempo which marks the winter sea son. Child Artist Us 'Appearing Here Visiting In the valley for the past few weeks have been Mr. and Mrs. P. M. Carter, of Sacramento, and their small daughter, paulene Elizabeth. Although only five years old, Paulene Jir attained an enviable position In the musical world. She plays the piano, and has been mentioned as very likely to follow In the footsteps of her famous f el low-art 1st, Ruth fllenczynskl, chlld-prodlgy. : .Mr. and Mrs. Carter were at one time residents of Medford, and are well known In this vicinity. . Paulene recently gave a recital at the Baldwin Piano Shoppe, and was enthusiastically received. She also played for the Southern Oregon Plo seer meeting In Ashland this week, and has appeared on radio programs here and lu San Francisco. She Is a granddaughter of the late Ell K. An derson, well known pioneer of south rn Oregon. Charming Setting For "Normal" Tea. The beautiful terraces at the Chattln home afforded the setting for tho charming tea, given in honor of the Junior women students of the Southern Oregon Normal, Wednesday evening, from four until five, which was sponsored by the Big Sister Council, and Dean D. Virginia Hales, who acted aa hostesses for the In teresting function.' The prettily appointed tables were pi need in the flower, surrounded gar ' dens, the brilliant autumn colors giving an added note of gayety to the scene. The Misses Helen Taylor and Ber nlce Reames poured. Others assisted about the grounds. Miss Brrllla Qearhart headed the committee tn charge of the affair, with Helen Ellenberger, Aline Hill, and June Brill assisting. The faculty of tho Southern Ore gon Normal and ot Lincoln school were also present. . Approximately 200 guests enjoyed the delightful hospitality. Ashland Tidings. Coveratone were united In marriage at the church of St. Lawrence in Portland Monday morning at 11 o'clock by Rev. T. O. Springer, uncle of the bride. The bride waa attired In a brown traveling ault, trimmed with beaver fur, completing her costume with brown accessories, and wearing a corsage of gardenias, orange blos soms and valley lilies. Mlsa Norma Beard of Vancouver, Wash., waa the bride's attendant, and wore a rust-colored gown with a corsage ot Cecil Brunner roses. Dr. George Brocher, of Portland, acted aa best man. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Springer, an old Portland family, and haa lived In Portland all her life. She la a graduate ot the Multnomah school for nurses, and has recently finished a special course In surgical work. Dr. Coverstone,' who la the step son of Dr. E. W. T! CLEVELAND. Sept. 88. (AP) The supreme council of ancient ac cepted Scottish Rite Masons, north ern Jurisdiction, approved a $40,000 appropriation today to finance a continuance of its fight against de mentia praecox, a form of Insanity. In making the appropriation, the council accepted a report of Dr. No lan D. C. Lewis of St. Elizabeth's hospital, Washington, D. C, who rec ommended a concerted and coordi nated drive against the affliction, to be led by 200 of the country's lead ing scientists. Dementia praecox, the doctor said. has filled one-fourth of all the hos pital beds in the United States and is costing $40,000,000 a year for treat ment. The disease, he asserted, con stitutes the largest unsolved medical problem confronting science today. The approval of the appropriation was one of the principal acts of the council's final session here. Next year's meeting, officials announced, will open the fourth Tuesday of Sep tember at Boston.
