PAGE SIX MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFOKU, OREGON, FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 1935. MORNING STAR SYSOrSltt: Emtly Pelton hat yr.-.duated from colleae with ion oi"3, ami cith three precious mem ories. One- is Judith Carroll, the flashing roommate the had as a Freshman. One ie Jutlith'e brother, David, whom K-ntly promised to marry just before the Carroll tost their fine old plantation. One ts Charlotte, who euecceded Judith as roommate. Hut Judith is married, David is lost to her and sensible Charlotte hat a ioh. F.mihi won ders, at the farewell dance, what she sha'l do. Chapter 13 . PUZZLED MOST ot the dancers, she thought enviously, wera going back to school next week: moat of them had one more year between them and what the lecturers ominously called Life. It was only tonight that she had realized that school was over. Sum mer had been just another vacation, just as all the summers before this bad been vacations; but this was September the first September she could remember when there was nothing definite ahead of her. Frances Felton had advocated a "year ot play." "You've been away from us most of four years, and your father has counted so on hav ing you at home," she had said subtly, realizing that Jeffrey's lone liness was her trump card. "And besides, I think you really Jock Cuihlng cut In, need a vacation. Graduating from Ardinore la a very severe mental and physical strnin." To Frances it would probably have been a severe strain,' but Frances was not twonty-one and eager. Frances was forty-six. and above all cautious. ' She was a.zt determined that Emily should nover become "strong minded," as the girls who went into the newer vocations Invariably were; nover realizing how complete ly out-worn the term had become. And, partly because Emily had no counter -proposition to mnke, Frances had won her point. You couldn't put i p a very stiff resist ance to a thing when thoro was noth ing you wanted vory badly to do In Its stead.' "A year of play." It sounded en trancing, hut how did you go about It? With Edwin? Or with the youths who were nt this moment shouting tho belligerent words ot the Wash lnKton and I.co Swing? She had grown up with these boys; had aoen them recently emerge from the nwkward stages ot adolescence; and whntover charms they mlpht possess were blurred by familiarity. Just as her own charms were probably blurred for then. That, she decided, was why so many marriages wore mado between people from different towns: the snnbnosed boy you'd played with was Invested, away from home, with tho t-'lamor of strangeness and mys tery. Jock dishing cut In, grinning amiably. "What's your program for the year. Bachelor of Arts?" She slithed. "I wish I knew. Bridge, 1 suppose, and tho Woman's Club. Or maybe a troop ot gtrl scouts." Ho frowned. "It sounds bad. Milt then, yon might bo teaching oehool, and iinthlng could he worse than that. Drlclge and girl scouts may help you to live down that Arilinoro diploma, but If you begin to teach you're lost." S!IK laiiRhed ruefully, thinking how Charlotte, for different rea suns, had said the samo thing. "Hut what's the use In getting a diploma If you hare to live it down?" Olii-rtitln Patient YnteN. Was It, she wondered, such a foregone conclusion among ner friends that she would marry Edwin? If she wasn't careful, tbe mere force of public opinion would push her Into it. She shook her head. "I hate to disappoint you, but It isn't." Jock grinned. "No-oo?" he drawled, and relinquished her to another partner. As if to give the lie to her denial, the partner was Edwin. Edwin danced, as he did most things, smoothly and proclsely, with a complete lack ot abandon or Im agination. When the orchestra had drifted Into "Good Night Ladles," Edwin said softly, "Would you like to get out before the crush starts?" Ordinarily she rather liked crushes, and calling goodbye; but tonight there was too much ot fare well In the goodbys. She nodded, and slipped away to find her wrap. They were silent during the drive home, but then she and Edwin were silent oftener now. When there was nothing but surface subjects to dis cuss you eventually exhausted them, and Edwin had never yet lost his fear of abstract or intimate topics. grinning amiably. AT tbe doorway he stopped the motor and laid his band gently upon her arm. "Is it too late to talk a few minutes?" The tone betrayed him. It was husky with emotion and nervous ness, and Emily guessed with a sink ing heart what was coming. She longed to put blm off, but the thing had hung suspended so long above her head that there would be a cer tain relief In having It fall. She said qulotly: "I don't think so." He cleared his throat and she wanted to laugh hysterically. It was like Edwin to mnke a formal pro posal; If there had been room he might evon have gone down on his knees to her! "1 wanted to ask you to marry me," he began haltingly. "You must have known I love you; that I've loved you over since wo wore chil dren. Ilcfore this I wasn't In any position to tell you, but now I am. "I'm mnklng three hundred and fifty dollars a month and we could live comfortably on that if you could love mo enough to marry me I'd he the happiest man on earth." Ho stopped abruptly and waited. Suddenly, to her infinite disgust, she began to cry. She didn't want Edwin to love her like that because It gave him such a hold on her. You couldn't help feeling a certain pity and tenderness for a man whoso de votion had been so enduring and so w hole hearted, even while you knew that you didn't return It and prob ably never would. Ills distress was Intense. "Emily!" he begged, laying an nrm gently about hor shoulders. "Please don't, I won't hurry you; I Just wanted you to know." She managod a shaky smile and the arm lightened, very s'lshtly, about her shoulders. In a moment, if she didn't speak, ho would tie kiss ing her reverently, and she didn't want to ho kissed reverently.
